NEC CD RW NR 9200A not reading or writing

WinXP Home, 2.67GHz Pentium 4 , 1GB 266MHZ SDRAM

NEC CD RW NR 9200A shows up in Device Manager. Properties says it is enabled & functioning properly. However, when I place a CD or DVD in it, the device tries to read the media for a minute or more, but never recognizes the disc in drive, so it does not play or write to disc.

Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0
Dated 7/1/2001

I assumed it may be the driver are out of date or corrupted, so I downloaded the latest drivers listed : NECNR92V203 and placed them in a new folder. I tried to update drivers in Device Manager by locating the folder where the above file is located, but I cant get the drivers file to open or install.

I tried viewing the "README.txt" file included with NECNR92V203 and its in Japanese, so I cant read it.

This is not a driver issue but to make sure, uninstall it from device manager and reboot. The computer will automatically find it and install them again.

The issue is with the hardware itself; the drive will need to be replaced and they can be had for under $25 for a DVD burner which will do more than what the one you have now will.

I suggest that there is simply dust on the lens. Spray inside the drive with some compressed air, like that in a can found at computer stores. If that does not solve the problem you can try cleaning the lens with a long Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. If it still does not work I would replace the drive.

Wont recognize burned disks

This does sound like a defective drive, most likely a laser / reader issue, because the refractive properties of the CDR is different from a "pressed" disk it looks like thia failed TOC seek issue, the head starts at the center of the disk and reads outwards, the click noise is most likeley the head reaching the terminus (the outer limit of the motorised movement), the drive then unable to find the TOC gives up and decides the disk is unreadable. if this drive is within the manufacturer's Warrantee period I would reccommend sending it back.
