Why is the disk drive green light off an on no power up of computer?

If you're talking about the light blinking on the CD/DVD drive when you try to turn on your system .. that's because it's getting enough power for the disc drive to run it's onboard boot circuits. Does not mean that the rest of the system is getting the power it needs .. could very well be that your main Power Supply Unit (psu) is going out.
Note :: PSU's are one of the most frequently replaced items in desktop systems. Many new systems come under-powered and upgrades that place more demand on the power supply will stress minimal psu units.
When I replace them, if at all possible, I put in stronger ones so they do not stress and wear out as quickly.

If you're talking about the actual Power LED on the computer blinking, its most likely an error. The 8200 has a set of LEDs on the back to indicate various failure codes. You didn't mention beeping so its not a beep code, which exists as well. If any light other than the CD/DVD disc light is what you were talking about, please clarify or visit [Link shown below] :: the Dimension 8200 pdf manual link, codes in it.

When I turn on the dell dimension 8200 the light on the power button does not turn green, it stays amber color blinking and the computer does not turn on, is it the power supply that is gone bad?

Check all below possibilties & see if it works.....
  1. GGGY diagnostic lights can indicate a bad motherboard, or possibly a hard drive failure. You could try opening the case, then remove and reseat all the power and data cables, cards and memory and see if the system bootsCheck for burnt/charred power connectors on the motherboard and for any capacitors with bulging tops or are leaking, the tops should be perfectly flat.
  2. Could you please check out if the you are not having a battery problem. This could be the source of all the trouble that you are having.
  3. do the fans and hard drives spin
Please rate & vote, if you like solution
Thanks

My dell beeps once then three times then twice. just a blank screen

Thats called a post beep. You may need a new power supply....also check your internal fans to make sure they are spinning. Make sure memory is seated properly. Motherboard may also be in question. Try unplugging letting it sit for a few then plugging back in.

"my computer will only beep no screen,it beeps

Hi

You likely have a bad memory module. First, try removing all the memory and putting it back in again. This is called reseating. If you still get the errors, then try removing one stick at a time and testing it with each stick (provided, of course, you have more than one stick installed). If you only have one stick installed, remove it and turn on the computer and it should beep at you as well. That memory stick will need to be replaced.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate this solution as fixya. Thank you.

Dell Dimemsion 8200 Won't Boot - Beeping Sequence 5-2-2-1

Often simply disconnecting the power cable, holding power button for 15 seconds, release power button, plug back in will work

Otherwise remove CMOS battery and perform above operation

Hope it works

Motherboard blew up

I would recommend buying a replacement computer, and install the Dell IDE drive in an external 3.5" IDE hard drive enclosure. This way you can pull your information off the the Dell hard drive, and then blow it away.

Keep in mind that new computers use a SATA drive, your old Dell '8200 has an IDE drive. Also keep in mind that your Dimension 8200 drivers won't work on the new computer.

You might be able to install your Dell drive as a slave if you have an open IDE channel available.

Good news is, your old Dell uses RAMBUS memory, which is worth a lot. It's a good parts computer, and most people who look for computer parts know of the bad capacitor issue on Intel made Dell motherboards from that era.

Dimension 8200 will not turn on

Try a new power button. Also does the machine power light turn on at the front of the machine? if so check that the CPU is seated correctly as if it has come out of position then the machine doesn't boot. I would like to think power switch though.

Thanks J
