GAS OVERFLOWS WHEN GAS TANK VALVE IS TURNED ON.

I have an old Troy-Bilt Horse Tiller with a Briggs Model #171432-1124-01 7 hp engine. When I open the gas valve on the tank, the carburetor overflows, flooding the engine and kills it. I have put in a carburetor overhaul kit but that has not affected this problem. Is the float the problem? I have checked it for leaks but can hear no sloshing around of gasoline in it.

Please help....

Thanks - Bob

The float could just need adjusted. It may be floating up to high to stop the gas flow correctly. Some carburaters that I have worked on had a small rubber needle valve seat. If you blew the carb out with forced air you might have blown this out.

Had the same problem and solved it by storing the tiller with a block of wood thick enough under tiller depth mechanism until engine was level. Close the tank valve and let motor run until it stops.
Has been working for the last ten years or so.
    Hope it works for you.

If you don't hear anything inside the float, it has to be leaking past the needle and seat. Replace them. Dwain

This is a Troy Bilt Big Red Horse Tiller. Wont crank. new battery. ignition switch good. starter relay clicks when ignition switch turned. jumpering the relay makes the starter spin.

The starter solenoid/relay clicking can mean a bad starter solenoid/relay or bad grounding. Not knowing what engine you have as they have used Kohler, Tecumseh and Briggs and Stratton over the years. hope this helps

Why isn't engine getting gas thrugh carberator?

-Possibly fuel line is clogged between tank to carburetor. Or the line
is closed. (Most tiller has a Open/Closed valve that let you open and close the gas line)

Good luck

Gas floods into carburetor even with a new carburetor

The only thing that stops gas going into the carb is the needle valve and seat in the bowl of the carb.
Doing the same thing with 2 different carbs sounds like trash in the gas tank flowed into the carb and is holding the needle valve off the seat allowing gas to flow all the time.
Clean the tank. Clean the trash out of the needle valve/seat. Add a small engine fuel filter between the tank and carb.
You should be good to go.

My 5 horsepower pony tiller just shuts off with no warning after about 20-30 minutes of tilling and will not restart again until it cools down to the touch I have changed the spark plug, drained and...

I also was having issues with an old 5 horse Troy Built tiller that would fire when gas was in the tank then stop running. If it's a Briggs and Stratton engine like the one I have it's probably you can remove the muffler to gain access to the side of the carb. Remove the four screws and the cover off the fuel pump diphram and check to make sure that the rubber isn't cracked or degraded. I replaced the one I had and it now runs like a champ.

I HAVE A 8HP HORSE TROYBILT TILLER. I CAN NOT GET ANY GAS INTO THE CARB. I HAVE CLEAN GAS, NEW HOSES, AND CLEANED THE CARB. THE FLOAT IS NOT STUCK, ANY HELP?

have you checked to make sure your fuel shut off valve is turned on? If you remove the fuel line at the tank( with something to catch the gas) and your fuel shut off is turned on and you get no flow then something is clogging the fitting at the tank or inside the tank. You will have to remove and clean the tank. Let me know how you come out.

Gas tank leak

The gas tank would go with the engine. Find the engine number (Briggs & Stratton?, Kohler? ) You can order it online from Briggs & Stratton parts, or like Jack's small engine, or your local mower parts supply. Common poblem with these plastic tanks.
