Question about IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook

Blank screen and unresponsive hard drive nothing on external monitor either

I have an ibm thinkpad t40 type2373-72u the machine powers up but the hard drive does not respond and the screen is blank (as in no backlight or picture of any kind). connecting to an external monitor yeilds nothing. occasionally on startup a few beeps will occur but that's it. ideas? it seems pretty fried and i know that there are reported problems of mother board issues with these machines... if i could just get a display on an external i'd be happy since i'm really only planning to use the machine as a server.

i can't see anything so no i can't get into the bios. also the ram is looking ok. it responds with beeps when i take it all out. but behaves no differently when i switch slots.

i suspect its the motherboard i just don't know if i wanna go through the trouble of reflowing it. also i don't have a heat gun which i'd need to get.

Did u manage to enter your bios?if not, then i suspect your ram has a problem..normally notebooks are equipped with two modem...try to use one of them only....also, try to change the position(means slot A is for RAM A and slot B is for RAM B- try to place RAM A to slot B first n test your notebook)

hope it will help ; )

My IBM T40 boots to a black screen with the "z"(light at top to right of power.

Try these steps:

1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter
2. Press power on button for 30 seconds or so (one min is also too)
3. Attach battery and plug into wall
4. Power "ON" as normal

If you are still getting the "Z" and a black screen then I would have the video card or hard drive looked at and replaced. Start with the video card and then look at the hard drive

Power problem

If you have already tested and changed the RAM then from your description and the things you have done, it looks like you have a faulty motherboard.
This computer is too old to consider replacing the motherboard, if you could get one. If it was me I would put my money towards a new one.
You could use the hard drive, put it into and USB hard drive adapter case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

"z" light comes on, then battery charge indicator -Doesn't start!

Hi,
If there no indicator of power on the laptop , There could be two problems either the AC adapater is bad or the motherboard connector pin or board is faulty.
If you see power light activity , but the screen is blank. try connecting an external monitor to the laptop. Press the Fn+ F8 key to toggle the screen to the external display. If you see the display on the external screen then the LCD is bad . Otherwise its your video card.

Thanks for using fixya

IBM Thinkpad T40 randomly shuts off

did the monitor turn off when it is in idle mode? it might be the monitor power options (it might have been set that when it is idle for an X minutes it will turn off). check the monitor power settings.

IBM ThinkPad R40 No PowerUp

If the the ram is the problem of your system, there should be a power on light on the system. indicating that some of the component of the system is not working correctly. But since you mentioned there is no light, it is the possibility that the problem is the motherboard itself.

IBM Thinkpad T40 Powers on but only the fan works nothing else

you may have knocked your hard drive lose
are you getting any error messages
you can take the hard drive out put it back in and start up pc to see if that helped.
If the hard drive was'nt the problem you may have caused something else to be lose.
Shut pc down and try hard drive first
