Question about Whirlpool Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

Can you microwave an aluminum tray (ex: frozen meal)?

I heard (second and third hand) that all microwaveovens of recent manufacture can handle microwaving food in aluminum trays (ex: frozen pot pies). Is this true??

You can use aluminum foil for shielding (use small,
flat pieces), small skewers, and shallow foil trays (if tray is not taller than 3/4 in.
    [1.9 cm] deep and half-
filled with food to absorb microwave
    energy).

    Never
allow metal to touch walls or door."

I would assume that Whirlpool would be completely paranoid about consumers using their oven unsafely, so I was surprised to see this. Unless this is a devious plan on their part to encourage planned obsolescence?

No, this is not recommended. the newer microwave will not flash but, if you put aluminum inside, it will damage the Magnetron. this creates the heat and, if it is damaged, you will lose the heating action in this unit and the Magnetron is not a cheap replacement part.

I do not recommend inserting any aluminum objects at all.

They are referring to a composite type of aluminum. you will not be able to use pure aluminum in this microwave. pure aluminum will damage the magnetron assembly.

Composite forms of cooking ware is OK. make sure it is not pure 100% aluminum.

You will also take a chance of bridging ga full curcit of current if the foil touches the walls or door parts.

this is just not safe. that manual shudl be revised.

The problem could be a failing magnetron or control board. The tingle may be traceable to a faulty receptacle installation - one with a floating ground or incorrect wiring such as reversal of the hot and neutral lines. The vibrating sound seems to be one of the quirks of GE microwaves.

My samsung SMH7187STG microwave handle broke off.

You can order new "cap handles" (the plastic parts that join the aluminum handle to the door for 3.99 each plus 8.99 shipping and handling at the Sears Parts Direct Website. The part number is DE67-00222C. When you have the parts in hand, open the microwave oven door. On the inside surface of the door their is a black plastic frame around the door that pops off easily (gently use a screw driver to pry up the door frame) so that you can have access to the screws that attach the end caps to the door. You will need to hold the remant of the cap handle (the part that is probably broken off even with the glass surface on the outside side of the door) still while you unscrew the screws. Once the screws and broken remnant of the handle caps are out, you are ready to put new handle caps on the handle, then put the handle with the new handle caps on the door. By the way, Samsung was absolutely NO help with this. The agent I chatted with denied that their were any reports of the handles breaking off, so I had to cut and past the postings about the door handle breaking off ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE under "Community Q and A" into the chat box -- still the agent did not acknowldege the existance of these reports...or the possibility of a poor design. I asked for them to send me a couple of the $4 parts as a good will gesture....got nothing but lofty words about Samsung commitment etc. and only a authorized technition blah blah, no action. All you need is a strong thumbnail, a phillips head screw driver, new handle caps.

If it is under warranty, call service. I experienced similar odors, sounds, and failure to heat meals. The magnetron/emitter and the transformer are replaced on two separate failures. Now the third time just happened. I am afraid mine is out of warranty and I will not purchase Maytag again.
