Sticking typewriter keys

I have a Royal Companion, and only a few of the keys are sticking. Is there anyway to fix them? It looks like the sticking keys engage the ribbon index too late. I was thinkign of bending the linkange to engage the indexing on these keys?

Typewriter keys stick

Ok finally one I used to work on! The problem is the keys are gummy. Take off the top cover. Open the lid, the platen levers or on either side, push them down and remove the platen. There is a cover lever on either side. They are black and pivot. You slide the levers forward. Lift the top case off. There are finger springs over each key (looks like a comb and are black) Under the end of the spring, closest to the key you'll see a silver tab that pivots. (This on top of the typewriter, NOT underneath) Put something under the spring to keep it from flipping down into the typewriter. The spring WILL break, so don't pull it up too far. You need to spray the tab with WD40 and work the tab back and forth to loosen it. After you pivot it back and forth a few times, it will free up. I would spray all the pivots on all the keys just in case. Anyway work with all the keys that are sticking. Underneath there are springs that lift the key back up. Hopefully, none of them are broken, because that is a more difficult repair. Let me know if you have more questions. The main thing, is be delicate and careful.

I have a Hermes 3000 typewriter. Once I set the left margin, it's not sitting there. It moves fast to the right margin. I am not able to type a single word because of this. Is the mainspring is bad? ...

The mainspring is not bad or the carriage would not move that way. It sounds like and escapement problem either from the carriage release sticking, the escapement itself needing adj. which you probably cannot do, the escapement rack is bent or maladjusted, or the tab function is sticking or maladjusted. Check the carriage release levers to see if they are sticking. Also make sure the tab function is knocking off so the carriage is not in constant tab mode. Hope this helps.

I have a 1942 Royal Companion typewriter and the carraige return will not stay in the starting position. When I push it back to start typing a new line it will not catch or latch. It just springs back...

If you look under the machine (as you press the space bar or a key) you should see linkage leading to a starwheel/esapement assy. This controls the spacing of the machine and is probably gummed from age. A light spray lubricant, worked in, may take care of it.

Keys sticking. The keys at both ends are sticking or won't go all the way up and strike the paper.

Try trickling some White Spirit into the typebar slots and working the keys repeatedly.

A few keys are sticking on my Olivetti. They click up, hardly hit, and then dont return to their proper place. I'd appreciate it if someone could offer some advise...or name a place in Gainesville Florida...

Needs a good cleaning and lubrication. I charge $ 75.00 to make it clean as new. You can try to simply lubbicate it yourself. Just drop 1 drop of oil into each typebar guide. Hit each key a few times.
My number is 727-773-8973 in Largo, Florida

Need to clean and lubricate

Use a soft brush and maybe some air, but be very careful not to knock any springs loose. Sewing machine oil or TriFlow oil works best. Put a fews drops on your finger, and rub your finger across the type segment slots. Work the typebars a few times. If that doesn't do it, then the segment will need a thorough cleaning.

Royal Portable typewriter ribbon

Hi, I have a Royal Companion Portable from 1940's. I bought new ribbons at mytypewriter.com (select the "Royal Portable" ribbon). It fits. Anyway if it doesn't it's not an expensive mistake, but I researched this and apparently all vintage Royal Portables have the same standard ribbon. Worked out in my case. Good luck!

BROTHER TYPEWRITER

Is your typewriter made by Royal or Brother? I think your question was mis-posted under Brother as opposed to Royal. IF your machine is a Royal, Brother will NOT be able to help you. THIS GOES FOR EITHER MANUFACTURER...Have you inspected the platen drive gear? Is it cracked, missing teeth or otherwise damaged? If not look on both sides of the typewriter for the drive motor. Look to see if the gear mates with the motor.
