Question about Sta Rite Ds3hf 1.50 Hp Self Priming Irrigation Pump

1 Answer

Pump starts working once connected to a power source.

My sprinkler water pump starts working when connected to an electrical outlet. Previously, I had to press "start" from the program panel for it to start. It then continues to work until I unplug it from the power source. Pressing "stop/clear" on the panel will not stop the pump. What could be wrong with the pump?

Doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with the pump - it sounds like there is something wrong with your timer (or start panel). If the pump is kicking on, there is nothing wrong with it.

What does COM. mean

Copy following links to identify timer manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#sprinkler
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/orbit-connections.jpg
Do not connect voltage to COM and Pump terminals... these terminals have 24Volt AC output when timer turns ON. When timer turns on, then 24V flows to Relay. This action causes electro-magnet to turn on the pump.
Also do not connect power to rain sensor terminals. The rain sensor plugs into outlet, and produces 24V ac output. When rain sensor activates, then timer will automatically bypass the watering schedule until rain sensor resumes power output to timer.

Circuitry from fuse box (220v) to timer and to sprinkler pump 220v

Copy following link:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-Intermatic-sprinkler-timers.html
240Volt requires 2 hot wires, but not additional neutral wire. Just cap the neutral.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Inside-Main-Breaker-Box-12.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/See-inside-main-breaker-box.html
The rain sensor should have it's own power source (for example plug into outlet, or use 1 Hot and 1 Neutral to supply power to rain sensor), and then wires from rain sensor connect to two rain-sensor terminals located on timer.
Do not connect power directly the the rain sensor terminals.

Not enough flow and pressure to run sprinkler system

pressure in centrifugal pumps depends on the number of impellers in the pump housing, the clearance of the impellers to the housing and the power of the motor to drive the impeller/s
volume flow is also important as a pump without a high output will not produce pressure
check the jet size at the foot valve that is used to help lift water to the pump
It is a jet pump and will have a smaller line back to the foot valve for that purpose
next wil jet pumps if there is too much flow to the outlet , the pressure required to help lift the water to the pump is reduced and the volume is also reduced
you indicate 4 sprinkler heads per zone but how many zones are operating at one time
check the expected delivered volume for the new pump against delivered volume of the old pump as a starter to find the reason for the poor performance of the new pump
check also the rpms of each pump as that also has a bearing on volume produced

I prime the pump, and the sprinkler system does not hold pressure. I have also tried to prime the pump from the intake side. what happens there is that the pump actually begins to shoot water back out the...

You can't prime the pump with the same water source you are trying to build pressure in. Shut off all the water going to the house, use the neighbors hose or have several gallons (maybe 5) to prime the pump and continue priming pump until it starts to build head pressure then plug prime hole.

Can you use a draper submersible pump for a garden irrigation system to use with several sprinklers, does it provide enough water pressure on the outlet?

Here's how to tell.
Connect a tee to the outlet of the pump.
Install a pressure gauge in the tee.
Install a valve after the gauge.
Open the valve and start the pump.
Once water flows, close the valve slowly until you get 50 psi on the gauge.
Have a 5 gallon bucket nearby and measure how long it takes to fill the bucket at 50 psi.
If it fills the bucket in 30 seconds, you can attach heads to the pump that combined consume 10 gallons per minute.
Let me know how you do.

I have an aquamate pump and when i connect it to a continuous sprinkler it stops and starts contiuously

The pump is putting out too much water for the sprinkler.
You can raise the pump shut off pressure at the switch until it is higher than the pressure that the pump runs at with the sprinkler operating. You should have a surge tank connected to the system to give the pump time to balance with the sprinkler.
You can use more water with the sprinkler. This could mean adding another sprinkler or increasing the nozzle size of the existing sprinkler.

Our dishwasher won't discharge water..it has onlly a humming noise when it is on and nothing happens

If obvious have been checked (blocked outlet etc). The discharge pump is in line with the outlet pipe. It has a hose clamp on each side and has 2 electrical push on connecters. The pump can be easly removed and connected to the mais supply and should spin freely. It does have an impeler in the plastic housing that "pushes" the water out once power is on. The impeler must not be obstructed by any object. Quite easy to check and replace the pump.

I have 1 and 1/2 horsepower sprinkler pump that wont prime. As soon as the end piece fills, it will empty if I open the end to the sprinkler.

I don't know what is your system set up. However, the system set up should be the following;
1. Your 1-1/2HP sprinkler pump must be installed at
a fix location nearest the water source. (Complete
with power and plumbing lines.)
2. At the end of the suction line is a vertical check
valve with strainer.
3. The suction pipeline must be connected to the
suction port of the pump.
4. At the discharge port, a flow control valve tee must
be installed. The flow control valve tee top is
covered with a plug, which serves as the priming
port when opened.
5. After the flow control valve, connect a short nipple
so that you can put a gate valve to stop the water
flow or allow the water to flow. You may connect
a pressure tank at this point or you may connect
the pressure hose going to the sprinkler.
6. To prime the pump, open the plug at the flow
control top. Fill it full with water, replace the
priming port plug.
7. Turn the flow control valve to full closed position.
8. From full close position, switch the power on.
9. The pump now run on and off due the pressure
switch setting. Slowly open the flow control valve
such that the water pressure remains steady.
10. Take note of the pressure.
11. Shut the power off, and connect the sprinkler
pump hose.
12. Put the power back on, and allow the pump to
run with the sprinkler.

Under this set up, you can run the sprinklers when your pump is running. Hope this will solve problem.

Flotec Model: FPS172 - Not Turning On - Click to the Pump

that peice you described is a check valve and it is required to sustain prime..if you dont have one please get one. otherwise when the pump shuts off the water drains from the pipe. you may also need to reprime your pump by putting water in the pump from a point in the top feed
