Usb ports will not recognize flash drive, camera and printer

When I shut down my computer and then restart it sometimes it won't recognize my printer then I have to reinstall driver for it and it is fine until I shut down again. On occasion it will appear after just a restart. But....the usb ports will then not recognize my new camera or flash drive. Can you help with this?
Thank you...Janette

USB devices are great when they work and a pain when they don't. Moisture in the air can corrode copper and aluminum contacts, depending on what they are. Gold contacts are best, but that makes the cables more expensive.
Instead of reinstalling your printer driver when the printer is not recognized, just unplug both ends of the USB cable and then plug it back in. This refreshes the contact connection. For your camera and flash drive, ALWAYS use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the System try in the lower right on the task bar to disconnect them before removal. Windows needs control over removal to make sure it is not writing to them and corrupting them. With the printer, you can safely remove the cable when it is not recognized because it is not sending to it. By pluging the printer back in, the computer and Windows sense the change and checks it out. Another option may be to replace the USB cable for the printer.

You do not need drivers for flash drives. The problem may be your USB ports.

Follow the steps given below to refresh USB ports.

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external usb hard disk...usb hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.

Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main usb devices at the rear end usb port, as they require more power to initiate.

If it turns out that the files are indeed corrupted, there are several free recovery programs you can try.

Dear Sir, When i inserted by Pen drive in my laptop it shows a message " USB Not Recognized" & then i tried the same in various PC's & Laptops but the same message has come. What shall...

Are you getting a "USB device not recognized" error whenever you plug in a USB mouse, keyboard, or other USB device? I love USB and have 5 ports on my computer so that I can connect my mouse, keyboard, camera, phone, and printer to it all at once!

However, last weekend, my computer stopped recognizing my USB devices! The strange thing about it was that the USB ports were not bad because all of my devices were still getting power to them. I could still charge my cell phone without a problem!

usbdevicenotrecognized-thumb.png

So I started with the normal fixing methods, including uninstalling the drivers for my devices and reinstalling them. That didn't work! Next I tried System Restore thinking that maybe I had installed something and it caused a conflict with the USB system drivers. That didn't work!

I read online that in order to fix this problem I should go to Device Manager and uninstall all of the devices under USB Controllers. Restarted the computer, reinstalled the USB drivers, but the problem STILL did not go away!

You may also see in Device Manager that the device shows up as an "Unknown Device".

So how did I finally fix the problem? Well, apparently it's a super simple solution! No need to edit the registry, uninstall drivers, or anything of that sort.

Simply UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY. Yes that's it! Note that this does not mean just turning off your computer because modern computers don't really turn off when you press the power button as the motherboard still gets power.

First to explain, the motherboard is where all of hardware of the computer is connected to, including the USB ports. Sometimes the motherboard needs to be "rebooted" also because something can go wrong, i.e. all your USB ports suddenly stop working. The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices!

So first turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in.

Hope this helps someone fix that pesky "USB device not recognized" Windows error!

I just bought a new Gateway NV53 laptop but my P4350 Lexmark all in one printer does not recognize any of the USB ports.

Did you check whether the USB ports are recognizing other USB devices such as Microvault or Flash Drive? If all other USB devices are recognized except the Printer, then reinstall the USB Drivers. You can uninstall the USB drivers from the Device Manager and restart the Computer. The USB Devices are listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in the Device Manager.

Have a look at this article on external hard disk troubleshooting. Could be that you need to delete the USB root hub devices in the Device Manager to force Windows to recognize the device.

Hi. If your saying that you're USB is not being recognize by your computer then you should try that USB on a different machine and try if its working there, and if yes the problem is with your computer you just need to update the drivers on your computer to recognize your USB, and if not I think the USB has the hardware issue. Hope This Helps

I can't upload pictures from my camera b/c the usb link does not recognize the camera.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive.

There are also plenty of photo catalog software packages out there, some free, some not, that can transfer and catalog your pictures so you can quickly find pictures from Susie's birthday party, for example. Just do a google search for "photo catalog software".

USB ports all seem troublesome

You cannot use wireless keyboard or USB keyboard in setting up the computer BIOS, what you need is a PS2 keyboard, if your motherboard supported USB booting, in Boot section of your BIOS change the Boot Priority to USB Generic Device, after you change the boot priority change the First Boot to Removable Device or USB Generic Device.. and after that save your configuration and restart the computer.. you must put the USB stick first before you configure the BIOS..
