Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

Microwave power shut off and stopped working

Microwave simply stopped working (as though all power was cutoff, light and all). Plugged into different outlet with no effect.  Could this just be a blow power fuse? We were using our microwave to bake a potato when the unit suddenly shut down. No lights, clock or anything. I checked circuit breaker and it was NOT tripped. I cycled power with the breaker and the oven began working again. My first thoughts were a thermal overload had tripped. Sounds like I am not the only one with this problem. How do I confirm if the overload is defective and where do I get a new one? Thanks

You can test safety thermostats with an ohmmeter. There should be a short circuit between the device's two terminals if it's closed. (This doesn't necessarily mean the device is good, though. It might be opening at too low a temperature when the oven is operating.) A high resistance or an open circuit means the thermostat has opened and needs to be replaced. An appliance parts store should have suitable replacements, or you can order from a number of online vendors. I usually start at the Sears parts site. They have part information for many models, and usually pretty fair prices for parts. But once you have the part number you need, a Google search will let you shop around.

It does sound like your oven shut down because of a thermostat. One is normally mounted on the magnetron tube that supplies the microwaves, and another is on the cooking cavity. I've had to replace these many times. If the main power fuse blows the oven will not come back on until it's replaced. But you might also have bad solder connections causing the trouble as well. I've seen solder joints on the control board and power filter board cause dead ovens.

If you're not absolutely sure of what you're doing working on a microwave, you might want to let a professional check it over and make an estimate. There are potentially lethal voltages present, and microwave leakage may be a concern as well.

SOURCE: dead microwave

There are replacable fuses inside. Taking the microwave apart requires removal of a lot of screws and the cover that can be rather bulky. make sure it's unplugged and safe before you begin. you can get replacement fuses at radio shack, ect. be sure to buy the same type and amperage. if the blow a second time there may be other issues.

New microwave stopped working after 15 seconds

Possibly the fuse / breaker is tripped, usually all outlets in one room share same breaker. Check breakers (or fuses) or try outlet in differnt room. If the outlet has power, (plugin a lamp to check) and the microwave still does not work, take it back to store for replacement or refund.

GE microwave won't turn off

Just checked the GE website. Had the same problem with my 5 year old microwave. GE website says to close and open the door quickly three times. First time I did this it didn't work. Second time I closed the door with some significant force and reopened it more quickly. Worked. Unplugged the microwave, plugged it back in, still fine.

all...you should first check to make sure the outlet you're using is good. Really. Next, check internal fuse and thermosafety in the unit. They are both found inside the button area. The safety is about the size of a dime and 3/8 inch thick with two wires. Sometimes they open. They should be continuous. Not it? Let me know.

Microwave stopped working

Generally, you get something unless the fuse inside is blown. There is generally a fuse inside the unit when you remove the button package. First, make sure that the outlet you have is good. Plug something else into it and see that it works.

My microwave has stopped working and switched on suddenly!!

Sounds just like a bad door switch or door switch mount. Probably the upper one. Safety info, disassembly tips, and door switch test and replacement info are all available at our Web site. See http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
