Bob, your wife is partially correct. However, both burners should have blue flames with orange tips. Cleaning the burners and the their venturi valves, should solve the problem. When I say cleaning them, I mean removing and cleaning them.

I have a uniflame grill that the flames barely trickle out,

clean the burner in clr check orffice is not blocked try this and see if flame is better

Bbq burner flame too high

If you got water down inside the burner(s), this condition should eventually clear up.

Cannot adjust flame

This could be a regulator or manifold issue. If the unit has a side burner check to see if it is burning at a correct flame height. If it is then the regulator is not the problem there is an issue with the manifold. Individual burner knobs not functioning

This is a problem with the regulator. Sounds to me like the pressure coming from the regulator is too high. You can get these regulators at most major hardware stores or directly from the manufacturer.
