My WD2500XMS 250GB has gone mad. It should have 250GB free space but it has 126MB(111MB free space) according to my computer. Tried formatting it however it did not change anything at all. Any ideas?

click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start

you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box

hope this helps you

Bad sectors are very common. You can check if there are bad sectors with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

You can attempt to recover your data yourself using http://www.r-studio.com/

But if you have never done this kind of thing it can be complex. If you want data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask for donations if you are happy with the results: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

Keeps telling me to format it

you could run the check disk utility
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive or
control panel administrive tools, computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input will damage your computer

hope this helps

You probably have a disk-drive with some "bad" sectors.
So, when you try to read the sectors that contain the directory for the 'My Music' folder,
that sector cannot be read, and thus Windows reports an "empty" folder.

It's probable that your disk-drive is about to _completely_ fail, not just _partially_.
Make a backup of what files & folders that _can_ be read.

Hard drive may be going south and there may be bad sectors on it. Run WD diagnostic program on it and cross your fingers. Do not format the drive - that will erase all. If you do find bad sectors the check disk program will find and block bad sectors and move data in bad sectors to good ones whenever possible. After that you can recover as much as you can but not all because there will be areas where nothing can be read at all depending on the severity of the damage to the sector.
