>> do i have to call my internet service provider to activate my modem?

Yes.

Each modem has a unique "address", and your I.S.P. uses that address to authorize each DSL-modem that tries to connect to their network.

Or, if the two of you live in the same house/apartment, you should just buy a "router". Then, both computers can connect to the router, and the router connects to the DSL modem, and both of you can "share" the monthly fee for the _one_ Internet connection.

Wireless networks - 29
Installation speed and simplicity Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and eliminates the need to pull cables through walls and ceilings. Components of a wireless LAN To set up your Wireless network at home you need to have the following:

Access point (router)
Access points (routers) are two-way transceivers that broadcast data into the surrounding environment. Access points act as a mediator between wired and wireless network. Most routers have a built-in DSL modem that will allow you access to a high speed DSL internet connection. The ISP (Internet Service Provider) you have chosen normally supplies a modem/router with the subscription to their services. Read carefully the documentation supplied
with your Access point/router for detailed setup instructions

No dsl light, thus no internet connection

check connections of the modem, power recycle, then call your internet service provider.

The dsl light on my modem isn't lighting up?

The dsl light is physical connection to the internet. If your dsl is a line share with dial tone and it sounds clear with no humm or static, your lines are most likely in good working order. So you may start with the telco tech support or better yet borrow a friends working modem and see if you get dsl at your place. This will tell if a dsl signal is making it to your jack. If it is then your modem is toast. If no dsl with a known good modem the issue is with you isp/telco. Most telcos charge a $60.00 isolation fee if the dsl signal is good to your home/business. So a little work on your part can save some cash.

Motorola MSTATEA takes long time to "reconnect"

Check the speed and call ISP tech support to run the line test
Before calling them do a complete power cycle
Turn the modem off and the computer off and router if any
Wait for 30 seconds and turn the modem on and wait for the lights to turn solid
Once ready turn router if you have else computer
Delete the temporary internet files browsing cookies, cache memory.
If the modem turns too hot after running for an hour please replace the modem
DSL light blinking green indicates that there s no proper signal to the modem
Check the wall jack for any loose contacts
If you have any filter check them too
Isolate them and try with it
Change them if possible

My Motorola Modem Mstatea

When the DSL light turns red it indicates that the modem has no internet signal.
So please check if the cables are connected properly
Also ensure that there is a proper signal to your premises without any interference
This is called intermittent connection
If the DSL light turns red it indicates that there is a problem with the cables connected or the DSL line
Please check your DSL connection with ISP

There is on another reason that the modem might have gone bad.
If all the above steps are executed and if this issue still persists replace the modem
