Sorry should of said its the acer aspire one using Linux and network signal shows I'm connected with either Lan cable plugged in or wlan but I use one or the other not both at once..

I am still getting system updates but the Internet icon when clicked just spins and goes no futher, the browser just never loads up and I remain in the desktop.. However the message/email buttons work and connect up so I've no problem getting my email through those programs its just the Firefox browser thats playing up??

    Thanks for the assistance flub,

Please treat me as a complete linux noob I have no knowledge of the OS at all as netbook was only meant for my kids to browser with.. as for distribution I'm at a loss as to what that is also...lol.

Yes Firefox appears to be the problem it never loads when I press the browser button on the desktop (connection window). Again as for running it from Terminal I know I have to press ALT-F2 but thats about as far as I know how to do?

Again thankyou for taking the time to assist me and I'm aware that I'm not much help and this must be frustrating for you, but thanks.

Not a problem at all, we were all noobs at one point or another. Depending on the settings on your computer, you should have a menu at the top that says either applications or programs. Go to accessories and then choose terminal. This will bring up something similar to a command prompt.

From there, type "Firefox." One of two things should happen, either Firefox will launch or it will give you an error message explaining why it won't work. Let me know what result you get, including the text of the error message if you get one.

Sorry, just assumed Windows. What distribution are you using? I have found that eeebuntu works very well on mine and handles all of the drivers well.

Does it appear that firefox is not loading, or is is not loading the page once it is loaded? If firefox is not loading, how are you trying to launch it (from the programs menu, quick bar at the bottom). Try to run firefox from the terminal and see if throws an error.

    Let me know - flub

What happens when you open your browser, does anything come up? Can you ping any internet sites? Are you using both the LAN and wlan at the same time (do you have a cable plugged in and show as being connected to a wireless LAN).

To start, I would try to do this:
    (Start -> Run -> cmd)
    ping www.google.com

See if you get a response back from the host or if you have a connection time out. Let me know the results.

    Good luck - flub

I have a acer aspire 1, my wireless internet is on but when i click the browser icon nothing happens-dont connect to yahoo etc. can anyone help/suggest any ideas

Can you connect to the internet through a different program, such as Firefox?

Is your wireless showing that you are connected to a network? If it is your firewall may be blocking the connection, try turning it off and then see if you can access the internet. If you can, add an exception to the firewall list.

If you cant it may also be your anti-virus that you are using.

Also you can try and let microsoft fix it for you automatically http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956196. Select the "Fix it" button in the centre of the page under the "fix it for me" option.

My Acer Aspire 7720 cannot connect to the internet

go to network and sharing center. it should be where you click on the internet icon down at the bottom in taskbar right side. when it opens try setting up a new network. if that don't do it check to make sure your wi fi is on or needs resetting. also on that page in the network center is a pretty good troubleshooter. good luck

I cant get into my internet settings !acer aspire

I know nothing about Linux and had the same problem. I found this on another site as I have been searching for an answer. Just finished as instructed and it has worked. Just in case I renamed the folder rather than deleting it! "Follow this then restart and everything should come back to normal. It took me 3 minutes and worked fine.

This is to find and delete the networking folder (which is causing the problem):

1. From the regular Aspire One options page, go to the Files panel
2. Click on the triangle to see more icons
3. Click on MyFiles, which opens a file manager window.
4. In the menu bar, select View->Hidden files, to show a tick in the box. You should be in the "My Disk:///" directory.
5. Scroll down until you find folder "gconf" and then click on that
6. Find folder "system" and click on that
7. You should now see folder "networking" listed as one of the folders.
8. DELETE IT! (Right click on the networking folder, and select option delete.)

I just restarted from here and the icon re appeared in bottom right the menu bar, I just clicked on it to set it up with my wifi signal and it did the rest itself. " Have fun and dont panic!
