Question about Sony CMT-ED1 Shelf System

No FM reception on CMT-ED1 Sony shelf system

20 years in IT and I can't get any FM reception. AM is OK. I bought it for £5 supposedly in working order.

Best wishes,

Martin

Hello, I've got the AM antenna that was provided. There is a socket for an FM coax cable. Shouldn't I still be able to get FM without a dedicated aerial?

    Thanks for your help.

    Best wishes,

I've taken one of those long plastic coated aerials off another system. It is like a 'T' with a very long leg. Strangely, it doesn't fit into the coax on the back of the Sony system. It's a gender problem I think, but it seems strange that the coax socket on the back of the Sony is different to the one on the back of the other system. The Sony socket doesn't have a rod or tube inside it.

    Best wishes,

    Martin

Neither the end of the aerial, nor the Sony socket is threaded. Is there anything here that is suitable:

Charlie, thanks for that. I've found similar from a UK radio shop, I'll try and get one tomorrow. I've never seen such a thing before. I'm puzzled why the aerial just doesn't plug in.

Thanks for your help, you've brightened up a wet and windy day in London!!

    Best wishes,

Are there FM antenna terminals/connectors on the back of the unit -- maybe marked 300 and 75 ohms?

There is hardly ever an internal FM antenna -- only AM. You'll need at least one of those twin-ax dipole antennas (there's one with every receiver bought).

You can test the concept just by putting a single piece of wire on each antenna terminal -- when you do this reception should improve immediately, but will not be as good as with the dipole antenna.

Hi, I owned one of these CMT-ED1 shelf system too. I never knew what the stabiliser was either, but i used the unit and it performed great without this added stabiliser, whatever it is... so you may not need it.

My dad now has that stereo and its still working fine years later!

The rds on my cmt ws2d shows the radio statio name

Radio Data System does need a good signal. You may need a better antenna. You don't actual say what you have for an antenna! So I can't say it's that. However not all Radio Stations broadcast the track name. And some don't broadcast any names of tracks. Some just tell you the name of the station and something like "all the best music on FM 105".

Hello
Check its sled motor. It is the motor that helps to spin the disc inside. If disc do not spin inside, check the voltage at the terminals of this motor. If it is alright, and comes near to 5VDC, the sled motor is damaged and have to be replaced. OK.

CMT-ED1 cd player works intermittently/partially

Greetings, I have owned this system since around 1999/2000, my CD function started to mal-function a year or so later. It would sometimes play, but more often than not, it would wobble and make strange clicking type noises. I gave up trying to figure the problem out because of the frustration, and didnt want to spring big bucks to take it in the shop to fix professionaly. However...only yesterday, based upon some advice I read online somewhere, I think I solved the problem and I will pass along what I did.
1 I first took some rubbing alcolhol and useing a model paint brush, I dipped the brush into the bottle and applyed it on the laser lense (do this spareingly, do not flood) this cleaned the lense of dust and grime)
2 It played a CD for the first time in 10 years. BUT...it started to do it's old tricks when I tryed to skip to the next song.
3 I noticed a small button on the right, front side on top of the unit. I think this button serves as a sort of safety stop. I then lifted up the glass lid, and held down the button with my finger. I noticed the lense of the laser go DOWN into the body of the unit. When I released the button, it came back UP.
4 I placed a CD into the player, placed the stabiliser on the top of the CD as normal, AND HELD THE BUTTON DOWN with my finger, LEAVEING THE GLASS TOP UP. It PLAYED. I recorded a Flatt

Here's the user manual which may help some folks:
http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/3860292141.pdf

Got my unit at a yard sale for 5 bucks. What a great sound!!!

The note on the CD lid referred to a stabiliser, but there wasn't one. The CD started skipping and making a whining noise.

Eventually found the manual and saw that the stabiliser was just a capto weigh the disc down so I put another CD on top of the one I wasplaying to add a little weight and it seems to be playing well. GoodLuck to you all.
