Hi

Log into your system and Open Device Manager.
If you dont know how to open Device Manger then :----

Right Click --> My Computer and select Properties. System Properties window appears.....
From System Properties window select the Hardware tab.
Click --> Device Manager Button

A list of devices appear on the device manager window...
Look out for Dvd/CD-Rom Drives in the list. If there's a red cross on the drive then, right Click it and select enable.
and refresh the list.
Normally reboot is not necessary but if does not come then take a rebbot.

If this does not solve your problem then go for this :----
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click O.K)

Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lClass{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

Quit Registry Editor.

NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.

Restart your computer.

First, if the CD drive uses an expansion bay on the laptop, remove it (with the power off) and reinsert it to make sure it is seated correctly. Power on the system, enter the BIOS setup program and check to see if it has been recognized again. If it is not being recognized here, the drive is defective and needs to be replaced. If the drive appears in BIOS, allow the computer to boot and check to see that the drive is appearing under My Computer. If not, open the Device Manager, click on the View menu and make sure that Show hidden devices is checked. Open the CD/DVD-ROM Drives section. You should see an entry for your disc drive and it may be dimmed. Right-clicking and selecting Properties from the context menu will probably indicate that the device is not currently connected to the computer (Code 45). If so, right-click on the computer name and select Scan for hardware changes in the context menu. If this does not detect and initialize the drive properly, the device is probably defective and needs replacement.

Cds aren't playing

Is it a CD you got from a friend or one purchased in a retail store? CD's you got from someone will not read sometimes on computers. Try a store purchased CD and see if it works.

Click Start/My Computer and see if your CD Drive is listed in the list. If not you will need to Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case then disconnect the two cables that go to the CD Drive, then plug them back in. Reboot and see if your cd drive is listed now under My Computer.

If all fails, your CD Drive could be bad and needs replacing.

Sounds like it is your power supply going. I know this sounds way off base. But I have seen it many times. First this happens with the CD or DVD as they have are lower on the list for power allocation than other devices for power. If this is it next the hard drive will stop responding. This has been my experience in these matters. It might be the drive but I would say 70% chance of power supply.30% chance of drive.

D Drive will not work.

try booting your pc using a bootable cd (in the same drive). If it boots, try accessing the directories in the CD. If ok, your CD drive should be OK. Otherwise get your CD Drive repaired/replaced. You can also try a CD drive cleaner if nothing else works...
