Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

First time trying and i cannot access my data. This is the first time I tried to pull it up.

I have a LaCie external hard drive. I backed up my data and now I have cleaned off computer. I cannot pull up my data off external Lacie hard drive. They did not send hardly any instructions just a small pamplet. I went on the net and it only give instructions if your hard drive is corrupted or problems.

I clicked properties on the Lacie icon in My Computer and click on tools. Now I will check out the Hardware when the Error-checking gets done. Thanks VGC

USB is very finnicky. Shut off your computer and external drive. Unplug the USB cord from one end (which ever is easiest). Turn on your computer. When windows is up, plug in USB cable. Turn on USB drive. Windows should recognize the USB ox and drive and attach the extra drives. But, you must have windows millenium or newer. Or you will need USB drivers for the external USB box.

When I say Windows Millenium or newer, that's Windows XP and Vista. They have the drivers built into windows to connect. When you are finished, do not shut the external drive off or disconnect it before you click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray on the lower right of the screen. If you remove/disconnect it efore windows is finished with the drive, you could corrupt the data or drive partition and loose your data. You can hot plug in any USB device but you should NOT Unplug any USB drvice until you get permission from Windows. If Windows says it is being used by another program and you know it isn't, Shut down you computer before you disconnect.

Lacie extern. hard drive is recognized, but I can't access files

Try connecting the Lacie to another computer, if it doesn't work then the hard disk may need to be formatted using Disk Manager. I suggest you format as a primary partition in FAT32.
If it doesn't work then it is possible that the hard drive in the Lacie has failed.
To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If it deosn't detect it as an external drive and you connot open folders and files then it is faulty.
You can install a new hard drive in the Lacie and then format in FAT32
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I am not really sure where to start here because I am a little confused about your setup here. It seems you made a great choice to keep Windows and your data on separate drives. Your primary hard drive is a really fast SATA Raptor drive, which is great, but I would never use an external hard drive for general everyday data storage. Many will probably disagree with what I have to say, but external hard drives should really be used only for temporary backup. I would never suggest using an external hard drive as your only copy of your data or for regular everyday use. There are several reasons for this:
1. External Hard drives are generally slower than Internal Drives.
2. Many of them come preformatted with Fat32, so you are limited to files no larger then 4gig.
3. They are more likely to fail because they are normally subjected to a greater likelihood of accidental bumping or dropping.
4. Many external drive enclosures are not properly cooled for continuous usage and thus lead to premature failure.
5. You often have no idea what brand of hard drive is actually inside the enclosure.

Don’t get me wrong, external hard drives are wonderful and I use them all the time. I have three LaCie 160 gig drives myself that I use all the time for temporary backup, but I rotate them so that I have 3 consecutive backups and would never use them (not just Lacie but any external drive) as my only backup or as a primary data drive. And yes, I have had to replace a few of them due to failure.

So to address your specific questions:

What went wrong?
1. Bad Cable - Well it is probably unlikely, but I would first try another USB cable just to make sure the cable is not damaged.
2. Power Supply - Try another power supply if you have or can borrow one.
3. Controller Failed – The Controller inside the Lacie has failed.
4. Drive Failure – The Hard Disk inside the Lacie has failed. Drives typically have an average 5 year lifespan, some last longer and some can fail much sooner. Unfortunately, you rarely have any warning, thus the need for backups.

Drive won't mount and makes slow clicking sound

A power supply failure can cause this; I've just been through it myself. If you have access to another LaCie drive, try its power supply on the "failed" one and see if it works.
