If you use the latest Hotsync Manager - version 7.0.2, you should click Setting, then Applications.
You will get a list of applications that you can synchronise with your PC. Place a check mark beside those you want/need. Make sure to click the Configure button ( bottom right hand side) and select the Handheld overwrites Desktop for each application. Click on the Set as default...
This should ensure that the data is copied from the handhelp to the PC, and nothing gets overwritten on the handheld.

Confusion on Backing up app data before the first sync.

If all of you info from your iTunes account is on your new computer, then you are safe. The program will erase the existing old data from the iPad and then sync it with the new computer and data. If you are unsure you can back up your PC and iTunes content first. I use an online backup service for all those just in case's. I can easily retrieve all my info. You can get free back for you PC here http://goo.gl/3VahX I hope this helps.

The computer froze up; I attempted to restart it but it got no further than the Windows logo. I then took the battery pack out and put it back in. Then a screen came up that said that Windows had failed to...

No, it is not hopelessly broken. I would suggest this:
When you start it, get into safe mode. Do this by tapping on the F8 key soon after you turn it on. When you see the white menu on a black screen, choose safe mode and let it start. Once it starts, you can do the troubleshooting. In your case, I would suggest doing a system restore back a few days when you know it was working.
That should do it.

My computer is saying my password is incorrect and i know the password is correct. how do i resolve this problem?

A Windows Password Reset Disk could do all the job for you, it can reset your lost Windows password safely and quickly without login, you can use the tool Windows Password Breaker to help you create a Windows password reset disk, then reset your password.

Fatal Alert Datamgr.c,Line7564 InvalidUniqueIDPassed I get this when I synchronize.

Perhaps you haven't tried performing a more severe reset to break the freeze. You might want to try doing a hard reset. This will erase all data from your hand held so make sure you have everything backed up on your computer so you can sync it again after the hard reset. Note, when I occasionally receive a Fatal Alert error, the Reset on-screen button almost never responds to a tap...I invariably have to depress the reset button in the back of my E2. http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(26419) resets:
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=obj(887) Depending on a variety of factors including the available memory on your E2 and other installed applications, the problem might or night not be caused directly by the program you were trying out. But once you get the E2 unfrozen, you should refer to this article to troubleshoot the cause of this apparent software conflict:
http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,Case=obj(27908) Also, I recommend going to the developer of the software you are using, to determine whether there are any compatibility issues at their end, and whether they have an upgrade available.

Here are the directions for the hard reset.

1. Press and hold down the power button.
2. While holding down the power button, use the tip of your stylus (or a similar object without a sharp tip) to gently press and release the reset button inside the hole on the back of your handheld.
3. Wait for the Palm Powered logo to appear and then release the power button.
4. When you see the message that warns you about erasing all your data please continue and then follow the on screen directions.

If this doesn't help then I recommend going to www.palm.com. From there you will need to select PDA's and then the model of yours. It will go to another screen and you should be able to contact palm via free chat. I have had to do this several times and both times I got fast service. Hope this helps.

How to reformat without loosing wanted data??

best way to do this would be one of two options.

First copy all your wanted data onto a CD / DVD (DVD RW best) and then once you've reformated your pc copy them back onto your desktop

The next option would be to buy an external harddrive. These are great because you can just move all the data you want back and force between your computer and external harddrive. This might be your best choice but it is a bit more costly

Safe E2

What sort of problems are you afraid of? There really aren't any viruses for the Palm that I know of. Nor any trojans.

However basic precautions would include downloading software only from trusted sites. A good place to start would be pocketgear.com (formerly palmgear.com).
