Re: Garmin 660

The Garmin GPS' are designed to read major roads and highways this way, as this is how they are marked as you drive on them. There is no way to change this.

My older garmin nuvi 660 has worked for some yrs. but now it will not take me on any highways and if I'm on the highway it wants me to get off every exit - only wants to go back roads both in fastest way...

First - look at your Route Options and see if you have any avoidances set and whether they are really what you want. Check you other route option settings while you are there to be sure it hasn't been set to some mode you didn't intend (like pedestrian).

You will likely find that your problem is in your route options setting, but if it isn't, then log on to, select the support button on top, and then select contact support. There is both a phone and an email option. Garmin offers free technical support for their units.

Off-Ramp errors

According to the Garmin site:

Question: Why does my nuvi route me off highways and through small side

If your nuvi routes you off of the highway and puts you on small side
streets, usually there is a simple navigational settings change that should
resolve the issue for you.

From the 'Where to?'/'View Map' screen:

Touch the 'Wrench' icon.
Touch 'Navigation' icon.¹

On this menu there will be a 'Route Preference' and 'Avoidances' menu

If you have the 'Route Preference' set to 'Shorter Distance', this may
sometimes route you off of a highway to put you on a more direct route. Try
setting the 'Route Preference' to 'Faster Time' and see if that makes a
difference in how the unit routes you.

Another setting that can be adjusted is the 'Avoidances' option, touch on
'Enabled' next to 'Avoidances'
A list of avoidances will appear, on that list if 'Highways' is checked
then the unit thinks that you do not want to travel on highways and
therefore routes you off of them. Simply uncheck the box next to 'Highways'
and that should resolve the issue.

I had "highways" listed, so I'm hoping this fixes my problem tomorrow.

We were sent over the worse mountain roads going from Lexington SC to Franklin NC. It most certainly was a dangerous way to go on windy mountain roads. The NUVI indicated it was the fastest way and the...

Welcome to FixYa:

I am not sure which model of the Nuvi you are using but I have the Nuvi 660 and can feel your pain. What use is going over a mountain or down roads made of gravel and miles from civilization only because it is technically a "shorter route"

So here are the basic directions to change that setting and get the Nuvi to keep you on the highways and interstates. If it varies too much, either respond with your model number or go to and get the manual for your model:

You should find what you need here, but to tell the Nuvi which type of roads to avoid and which ones to stick to:

go back to the SETTINGS menu
touch NAVIGATION again
and click on AVOIDANCES

Hope this helps and be sure to keep us updated!

Error message on screen (read message below)

Did you tried to update your Maps? There are two maps inside your Garmin. Basemap which covers all highways and major roads and mapsource source which cover regular streets. Try reloading mapsource maps.

From the "Where to" menu select the little wrench and then select map and then select Map info. What does it say for Map Info?

If the unit is still under warranty, call Garmin and get a RMA. Return the unit to Garmin.

Gives numbers instead of names on main rds and highways

The Garmins are designed to read the highway or interstate numbers instead of names. This is because on the markers on the side of the road, they are labeled by numbers. Here in NY it calls the Long Island Expressway I-495, the Clearview I-295, etc. If the unit is speaking the names of surface streets, it is working as it was built to.
