Cannot connect to wireless internet after SP3 update

Hi, I recently installed XP3 on my Presario V2000, and now I cannot connect to the internet wirelessly through my Linksys WRT54G router. My desktop is still connecting fine wirelessly, so I know the laptop is the problem. I have been on the phone with Linksys for hours, but they cannot figure out what the problem is.

Thanks for the quick response. I tried resetting the modem and router by unplugging, as you suggested, but still am having no luck connecting. Once in a while, the laptop will connect to the internet for a couple of minutes, but then it loses the connection again right away.

    Hi again,

I'm actually working in Windows XP. I'm having a little trouble following your instructions. Should "computer" be on my desktop? Sorry, I'm sort of a novice at these things.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

Please disregard the last post; I just figured it out.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

Under "network adapters", there is listed: 1394 Net Adapter, Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN, and Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC. Should I uninstall all three? Sorry for all the questions.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

I tried to connect to my network after rebooting, but now I'm getting the message: "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks and try to connect again." I've refreshed the list several times, my network still appears in the list, but I keep getting the message when I try to connect.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

Ok, now it says that Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed: connecting to the wireless network. Do you think I might need to uninstall SP3?

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

I don't believe so. Do you know how I could check? I think the computer came with it, but I had to wipe the computer clean at one point.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

Ok, there was no wireless assistant there.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

There is only one wireless icon. There is also an icon for the local area connection, which is not connected, but only one wireless icon.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

I get a message saying, "No driver files have been backed up for this device." I'm really sorry, my computer just doesn't seem to want to cooperate. If you have any other suggestions please let me know, but I completely understand if you want to give up at this point.

  • Jess Lewis May 27, 2009

Wow, for some reason, this time it was able to repair itself. I am currently connected to the internet, so let's just hope it stays this way! Thanks so much for bearing with me and for all of your expertise. I really appreciate you taking so much time with me.

    Have a great night!

Hi there.
Firstly reset the wireless router and the modem by unplugging the power supply from the back of them for 30-60 seconds (do not terminate power at the wall because there is still a trickle charge in the wires), then plug them back in and wait for 2 minutes for them to reset themselves and try to reconnect.
Please post back with the results and for additional advice if needed.

Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!

I am working on the assumption that you use Vista but XP is just about
the same. This method will hard reset the wireless drivers back to
    default settings.
Ok, what i want you to do is right click "computer" select "manage"
and then "device manager", a list will populate, then click on the + sign next to "network
adapters" and right click on the wireless adapter and "un-install" the
device, reboot the PC and wait for windows to detect the wireless
card and install the drivers for it, this will appear in the system
tray (bottom right hand side) when its done try to connect again

    keep me informed please

With XP the only thing that is different than Vista is the name.
If the "My Computer" icon is not on the desktop then click on the start menu and right click on where its says "My Computer" and follow the instruction in my previous post.
If you are experiencing difficulties please do not hesitate to post back

    Ok
Right click on the wireless icon in the system tray and select "repair", let it repair itself and try to reconnect again

Hmmm..... sounds to me like there could be a conflict of some sort here. do you know if the HP wireless assistant is installed on the laptop?

  • Lee Hodgson

Click Start , Control panel, add remove programs and look for the HP wireless assistant and uninstall it if its there.

Just to verify, in the system tray is there 2 wireless icons or just the one?

  • Lee Hodgson
    Lee Hodgson May 27, 2009

Lets try a different approach, right click on my computer and select manage again like you did last time and navigate to the Broadcom WLAN in device manager, only this time right click on it and select properties, click on the driver tab and select "roll back driver" if there was a previous driver installed it will roll back so just follow the instructions if it allows you to and restart the machine if it promps you to

Oh don't worry, i don't give up that easily !!!
Ok, before you uninstall SP3 try to reset the router and the modem again, this time leave the power disconnected from the for at least a minute and plug power back in, leave them another minute or 2 and try again, if it can see your network but won't connect, right click on the wireless icon and select repair again.
If still no joy uninstall SP3

Hi!

Your Compaq V2000 has an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG wireles adapter. (doesn't support N, but that's not the point I think)

If your new network configuration is based on WPA/WPA2 encyption, this adapter has some known problems to establish a connection. It works great with WEP, but not so well with WPA.
Sometimes the issue can be solved by installing the latest versions of drivers and software for the wireless adapter.
If it still doesn't work, a known workaround is to disable via device manager all other network adapters in the computer (ethernet adapter), leaving active only the Intel Pro 2200 wireless adapter.

Hope it helped,

Bogdan

I have an older Compaq Presario V2000. I recently had a new hard drive installed with windows xp professional. The S video port won't work when I connect it to the TV.

Make sure the most up to date video/chipset drivers are installed. You can get these at HP's support site listed below, just choose the appropriate V2000 model from the list (your exact model number will be printed on the bottom of your laptop) and download and install these drivers.

A Belkin router doesn't usually force the utilities page on you. I would advise checking your start page - you might have set it to your router's homepage by accident.

My compaq presario V2000 will only connect to dialup

To connect to your DSL internet you will need an ethernet port or wireless card on your laptop. Your laptop should have an ethernet port, it will look like a phone jack but a little bigger. In the off chance that you don't have an ethernet port on your laptop you can also purchase an ethernet to usb adpater. You may have a wireless card installed on your laptop, but if not you can purchase a usb wireless adapter. To use your internet wirelessly in your home you'll also need a wireless router. All of these things can be purchased at your local electronics store (walmart, best buy, kmart, frys) and usually are fairly easy to setup with the included instructions.

Have you tried to use a different browser to rule out IE (that has not been previously installed on PC)? Try Firefox (I prefer IE BTW), and if your internet starts working you know that it's your browser's. Also, you can check to make sure that there are no proxies setup in your IE. Click on Tools > Internet Options > Connection tab > LAN Settings (at the bottom) - once in LAN Settings, uncheck all the boxes.
