Connect that to your PC. Go to MyComputer. Right click on the drive and select properties. Select tools tab and click on defragment now. This will start defrag process.

There's no 'tools' tab for a NAS. For mybookworld, it has a 'host' USB connector (like the USB connector on a PC), and I haven't seen a host to host USB cable that will allow you to connect the device directly to the computer.

Why is there a question mark on my WD My Book 500 external Hard drive short cut?

Wow, Im amazed at the guy who threw his WD into the freezer for a week after a fatal crash and was able to get most of his stuff back! I was so frustrated after my second WD crashed that I gave up and used it as a door stopper. I was too bummed out to even bother returning it for an exchange, and when I did think of doing that, it was too late. I decided never to buy WD again, their drives are pure junk!

I cannot create new folders on my external HD

If the explorer shows you have some space left and can not create any file or folder, it might be because of heavily fragmented drive. try defragmenting thr drive using any application. I usually use O&O defrag .

I can not link up with My Book World Edition 500GB

That is because the MyBook is set with a default IP address of 192.168.1.257. You will have to put a static IP address in that subnet range in order to be able to see the external drive. Hope this helps....

Western digital 500 not coming on

did you drop it anytime recently...
if you did ....there is a possiblity of damaging the cylinders and sectors inside which could make it difficult to retrieve the data stored in the hd...
please take it to a service center to find it is not the case...
or

try to connect your hd in another system and see whether it works in that system

thankyou

Death of a drive

That sounds like a head crash. You should take to a service center and get it fixed and/or inspected.
