Yes its a split residential unit. yes the motors realy hot. And today i put a knew fan motor on it and it does the same thing.

  • fondrenjack May 28, 2009

I appreciate the help I got it figure out. The old motor had three wires the new had four. So i took off the brown white wire and it runs like a dream. So i guess you don't need the brown and white wire on my unit just the brown, black and yellow.

Is your unit getting a little old. Sounds like the fan motor is going bad.

Is this a split residential system. it sounds like you are talking about the condenser fan either way it seems like the fan is overamping and tripping on thermal overload which is a device in the motor that protects itself. when you shut it off for a while and turn it back on does the fan work. if you turn it off then turn it right back on does the fan work. when it shuts off is the motor really hot. if possible, and you know how, check amp draw. typically you can find the rated amp draw on the motor nameplate.

when u put the new motor on did you also replace the capacitor. if the caps not working correctly this can also be a cause. the new motor you have should say what size capacitor the motor needs i always install new caps with new motors. 5 or 7.5 mfd capacitor is most likely what u will need but you will have to check the motor nameplate to make sure or the box it came in might have it on the outside. with out the right meter you wont be able to check the capacitance of the existing cap. also make sure the fan prop is positioned right and turning the right way pulling through the coil and out the top as this is the most common flow of condensing units. if u can check voltage and amps if you have a meter and are capable. make sure power is off before replacing capacitor cause it will bite. when checking nameplate make sure you are reading the new motor for cap size and not the old one.

three wire hook up or 4. the differance is in the capacitor. the brown and the brown and white is for a permanent split capacitor which is the motor runs of its own capacitor and uses the two wires on each pole of the cap. 3 wire hook up is with a dual cap which charges the condenser fan and compressor but uses the same common. cap com fan are the normal connections on the dual cap. now if u had a brown and a brown and white with you're four wire motor u can use that either with a split cap by putting the brown on one terminal and brown and white on the other. u obviously have a dual cap which only uses the brown and u cap off the b/w wire make sure u cap the unused wires because any unused wire on there can short to the housing. good job on figuring that one out caps are hard for people to understand sometimes.

Intertherm MGHA-070ABFC-05 will not run/cool

Multiple problems. Eliminate thermostat first. Remove face from wall and turn on breaker. If fan still runs you have a bad board or bad relay. If fan outside is running compressor should be too. These operate on same contactor. Verify you are getting 24 volts to coil side of contactor. If odf stops working and contactor remains pulled in you have a bad motor. If odf motor stops working the compressor will shut off due to overheating.

Can hear compressor, cois get frosty but fan cuts out after five minutes. Why?

IF THE FAN IS CUTTING OUT U MAY HAVE STUCK TIMER IN THE DEFROST CYCLE MODE BUT MORE LIKELY U HAVE A POWER ISSUE, IS THIS A digital cold control thermostat? if so the control board itself may not be communicating with the thermostat, when the fan cuts out does the compressor keep running? and no clicking sounds?

Why is my True THAC-48 unit is not cooling?

need more info. is the condensor fan running? if not thermostat problem.if it is , is the compressor running or just makes a one time click a few seconds after plugged in? (after unplugged five minutes)... if this is the case it probably needs a new start capacitor (170 uf)..if the compressor is running the larger tube going in the commpressor should be cool about 40-50 after a few minutes .. if not then it is low on refrigerant..R-134 after 1995. or R-12 for older models.. now you also have inside fans and thermo buttons that can not be working.

Coleman Rooftop AC fan stops after 7 or 8 minutes of running. Will turn on again after about 10 minutes on its own.

Remove green (fan run) wire from thermostat, and connect to red wire (power) and see if fan runs, and if it will stay running. That will by-pass thermostat to see if it is problem. If it continues to run, thermostat is problem. If that doesn't cure it, I'd remove cover up top and with power off at circuit breaker, blow compressed air in to motor air holes to make sure it's getting proper air for cooling, as well look for small plastic plug on housing where oil can be added ( few drops) to lubricate motor. Leave cover off and try fan to see if that may help. If at all possible, a clamp on amp meter will confirm if motor or relay is at fault if none of these suggestions help. If amp draw at motor too much, motor may be seizing when warmed up from running. test draw when first started and after running for amount of time that it usually quits, and if noticeable difference, motor is seizing and needs replace. You can also test amp draw at main 120v feed wiring with unit just in fan mode.

Compressor starts and doesn't stop

Relay for the compressor may be stuck ( Contacts welded) both the fan and the compressor should operate at the same time. Have the relay(s) checked and possibly replaced.

Thermostat ?

The Air conditioner are good only the adjustment of thermostat are the problem, select the thermostat in lower #3 you observe the thermostat will off in such time temperature reach to #3 If you full adjustment the compressor will not off.
In fan selector the compressor will autamatic off because no connection attached fan only .

Compressor won't stay on...

My guess is that you have a problem with one of the following:

Start relay...this gives a quick shot to the compressor to start the cycle...if it doesn't shut it will go to overload. The capacitor in the start circuit which assists the start relay or the compressor itself. Best bet: get a service guy in.
