Question about HP Pavilion dv6000t Notebook

Windows XP start-up problem - Hangs

I'm using HP DV 6000t laptop. For last two days, my laptop freezes at boot-up. I'm able to goto safemode. But when I try to restore, it freezes again. It shows me a cursor with hour glass.

I tried following to resolve the issue. But none of them helped.

1) Removed battery & powersupply and pressed power button for a min to discharge any static charge (as per HP support team advise) and tried to restore from lastet successful restoration point. But it didn't work

2) I've removed RAMs & put them back again. Didn't resolve the issue

Finally HP support team told me to reinstll XP. But I've many applications installed on my laptop. So reinstalling all of them is going to be tidious.

Appreciate if the experts can help me to resolve this issue. Thanks.

Thanks Gough2960.. for the prompt response. But this way, I still need to install all applications (like antivirus, office 2007, Registry cleaners)..I'm hesitant to go thru this whole process. Is there any solution other than reinstalling XP?

    Hi BrokRench,

I've exchanged RAMs with spare ones. Still I've the issue with booting (hanged). So issue is not with RAMs.

  • kkdcricket May 27, 2009

Thanks gough2960...does it mean, I need to take a back-up of program files folder (say Program Files - bkp) and copy the contents back to Program Files folder after clean XP re-installation?

Did you test the ram in another system to make sure it was ok?Did you make any partion changes or modifications on the drive?

Others have had to load SUSE rescue then run grub to boot.
    grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
(hdx,y) # this will be the output
    grub> root (hdx,y)
    grub> setup (hdx)

When you reinstall xp you will not have to reformat the drive. Just reinstall the operating system. As long as you are in safe mode back up what you need to then reinstall xp.

as long as you have important files saved in seperate directory away from program files, you won't have any problem. your safest bet is still to reinstall windows xp and keep important programs away from program files.

You should not have to but it never hurts to have a back up of programs.

Windows xp on my hp pavilion laptop starts up and freezes at the windows is starting up screen. Will not do anything after that...just sits there! Help....without having tech fees and charges!!

Try tapping F8 as soon as the computer powers on.
Try Last Known Good Configuration.
If that doesn't help, try safemode.
While loading to safe mode, it will ask whether u want to try system restore.
Start system restore and restore the computer to a previous date when it was working fine.
If that also doesn't work, the only option is to reinstall Windows.

Hello,

Try to boot your Windows 7 bootable DVD and check for errors and then restart. Keep Tapping F8 until you see the safemode options. Then get into the safemode and goto command prompt type the chkdsk c:/r after that a process completes and then try typing fixboot thats it. It will work. Let me know if the problem cant be resolved or if you have any doubt.

Chrome mouse on laptop freezes, get stuck...advice

Ok..now that I have more information about your pointer problem, yes, there could be a trojan virus causing it.Best thing to do first is,using your other mouse, boot your computer up into safemade by tapping the F8 key untill you reach a black diagnostics screen. At the top of the list you will see "safemode",using the arrow keys on your keypad, move up to "safemode" and press Enter, then wait for the boot to finish. This procedure allows you to get inot windows with services and drivers only needed to help fix many problems.Sometimes there are trojans that will use certain windows services or programs you installed to run.Using safemode allows you to "get in" your computer without those programs and services running. After you get into safemode and your all booted up,see if you can use your synaptics pointing device normally,if so,then yes, there is a very good chance you have a trojan or trojans infecting your computer. If so,best thing to do,is open your virus scanner while you are in safemode and do a complete scan,to see if any virus or trojans are present and remove them, then reboot your computer and let it boot back up normally. We will see if any trojans or viruses are in your computer with this methode.Good luck. Please let me know what happens:)

I cant get my computer to fully boot up

This might happen if you install McAfee with applications running, or not restarting Windows, etc. I am not sure why you couldn't boot in Safemode, booting in safemode is exactly what you need to do to uninstall McAfee.

Hp desktop won't boot

Firstly how on earth did it get hit with lightening? i have several computers in my house none of which have been hit with lightening during a storm.

secondly it sounds like some of the components are damaged i would try the different components in different machines to rule them out if certain components are damaged you will have to replace them.

Sometimes it will come on and freeze in starting xp other times i just get black screen

- If the system can still boot to safemode w/ networking try to download some third party tools to check if the system is infected of virus.
- If the system wont even boot to safemode or freeze under safemode try to do windows repair.
- If this will not help you, try to back-up data using a third party vendor and do clean reinstall or you can also try running diagnostic test to check hardware issue.
