Question about Behringer EUROPOWER EP2500 Amplifier

1 Answer

Channel 2 Distorted/Clip light comes on

I only have a schematic for channel 1 so I will use the reference numbers from it.

The Neg step driver was bad (T18 - 50N06) This has been replaced along with D23 - 4007.

Both the -55 and -110 rails are up to spec.

All the output transistors meter good and nothing seems to be hotter in this channel than channel 1.

I'm looking over the DC protect circuit right now.

TIA for any help!

The smallest signal will cause the clip indicator to come on, along with the signal light and the output is very distorted.

Thanks Absrsvcs, I havn't had to deal with class G/H amps very often.

What address would you like me to email them to?

The QSC schematic is a bit better, Ill send a copy of it as well.

I went through the first couple of stages with a signal tracer, they seem to be OK. I'll go on down the line a bit.

  • RodC327 May 27, 2009

IC4 and 5 was replaced. Sorry I thought I mentioned that. The guy who owns this said the input was severly over driven, I suspected that IC4 was bad at first so we ordered it and 5.

T15 and 17 metered Good, but Ill double check.

Thanks for the suggestions, in a bit Im going to be back at it with the signal tracer and Ill update.

  • RodC327 May 27, 2009

Signal at the input gain is good, so the first stage of IC4 seems OK.

Signal at the junction of D33 and D32 is distorted.

All the points in between are on the bottom and a PIA to get to.

Working on a solution to remote the board so we can go through the 2nd stage if IC4 (IC4B)

  • RodC327 May 27, 2009

OK, now its gettin fun. There is another 4580 marked IC6. Its not on the schematic!

The signal to the input of one stage (pin 5 & 6) is good, but its output is bad (Pin 7).

No clue where it is in the circuit at this point.

  • RodC327 May 27, 2009

Yup seen the 4580s go before, of course this one is in a mid size surface mount package. Only had one.

I think we found a burnt trace we overlooked, thanks for the help so far, Ill keep you posted.

It sounds like the final amplification section is OK now. I'd be looking for a noisy transistor or transistor pair at the "front end" of the unit. There may also be a shorted coupling cap between the stages. If you can Email me the schematics, I can provide more details.

Check IC4, T15 and T17 for starts. I'll look a bit more closely and update this in a bit. Check the area for bad caps too. Stay tuned...

4580s are somewhat sensitive to overdriving. Even if not on the schematic, I'd change it. It should be cheap. If you don't have the exact IC, I think that a 4550 is the same pinout. Itt should be good enough for a test.

When setting up xr8600 is it best to start mains and monitors master at 0DB?

1. Turn the main and monitor volumes all the way down (off). Plug a cd player into channel 9/10 and play a track of music of your liking. With the main/monitor volumes still off, adjust the gain on 9/10 until the clip light turns on, then back it down until the clip light just turns off. Put the channel volume at 12 o' clock.
2. With the music still playing, turn up the mains to the desired listening level first, and then adjust the graphic eq until the music sounds good in the room. Remember or mark the position of the volume control. Do not use the channel eq on 9/10 for music that has been mastered properly, leave the eq flat. Once this step is completed then you have now set the main eq.
3. Repeat the same for monitors. Turn off the main volume and then bring up the monitor main volume to the desired level first, then set eq. Now your monitor eq is set properly. Remember or mark the position of the monitor volume.
4. Set up microphone - plug a mic into channel 1 with volume all the way down. Speak or sing into the microphone and adjust the GAIN until you see the clip light, then back down a litttle on the gain. Put the monitor and main volumes back up to the mark from step 2. Now adjust the volume and monitor send on the mic channel to the desired loudness first before adjusting the mic channel eq. Use subtractive eq method to minimize distortion and feedback. ...i.e. if the mic is bassy then turn down the lows, do not ADD highs. If the mic needs bass, turn down the highs.

Clip light will go on then goes off

The problem sounds like a dead short issue and the amp is in protection. Check cabling to make sure there are no crossed wires. You can also check by swapping channel 1 and 2 inputs and outs to see if the amplifier passes signal on the bad channel. Also could be an amplifier channel failure if it does not. Have serviced by an autorized service center.

Behringer EP2500 Clip light Channel 2 stays on & heatsink HOT!

There are so many components that can fail that troubleshooting this can be an expensive problem.

HINT: Put a 150 Watt light bulb in series with the power going into to limit current for/during troubleshooting.

Go through and compare the voltages on the teo channels. If power amp transistors have failed, likely the driver transistors also are gone.

Testing components in-circuit is very dificult. Resistors are pretty reliable and usually show damage by discoloration.

Furhter use before repairing MAY cause further damage.

Soon as i turn on my QSC RMX2450 the clip light comes on for Ch 2

Sounds like an output going bad. Try to get some electronic contact cleaner and spraying on the circuit board. If its corroded this will help clean the circuit..

My pv6 mixers red clip lights remain on

FIRST check that your power adapter is 16 VAC at 1 AMP and that it is the original unit.

The clip lights monitor levels at several points. If you cranked the EQ's for maximum, say bass, that MAY cause them to illuminate.

As a test, set all EQ's at mid point. Remove ALL input cables. Are the lights still on?

It is possible that you can have a ground loop that is putting signals in that causes clipping. Another source is if you have a microphone that may be FEEDBACKING at supersonic frequency that you can't hear... that is why we disconnect all the inputs as a test.

Finding schematics so one can repair these devices can be a problem. If ALL the clip lights ar on, then it is probably the reference level source for the clip level threshold... however finding a schematic would be necessary and while part cost would be probably under a dollar, the labor and time to find the schematic would be unknown.

Sound from left channel is small and distorted.

The distortion might be caused by a resistor. The loss of volume could be the capacitors, but you could try injecting signals into the transistors to see if any has gone. They can cause the distortion and loss of signal. If you apply a soldering iron to any part it will heat up quicker, or you could also use a hairdryer for the whole thing. You can also get a freeze spray that cools things that have heat sensitive faults (available from electronic parts shops).

Jl audio 500/1 amp low ohm light at high volume

I would try running the subs in parallel. Pos to Pos Dual Voice, Neg to Neg Dual Voice. Then Run + to + stereo - to - stereo on both channels.
So you have + and - running to one channel and + and - running to the other channel.
Also your LPF filter could be set too high.

Behringer EP2500 no output on CHANNEL 1

check all op amps for correct voltage swing +-should be equal, test output of op amps no voltage should be present, use chasis gnd as tester neg.check voltage regulation especially 12v or 15v +-.note some amps show unequal led indications when only 1 channel connected to a load.I will try to get some more info on this specific amp because i don't know this circuit well, keep in touch as you update though.
