Burning plastic smell

Kenmore stove Model 790.9743, in daily use for a few months, still smells like burning plastic whenever I use the oven. I assumed this was just an initial "burning off," but three months? Is there a way to hasten the process, or is this something wrong?

    It's electric.

  • colin_montoy May 27, 2009

It's a solid cooktop, and I don't see a way to lift it. I think you're right; I should just call for service. Thanks for the help.

Hi, Sounds like something is wrong. Is this a gas or electric oven? Did you have to change settings from natural gas to lp?
Please let me know, I would like to try and help you.

Ok, If you can raise the top panel on this model, check and see if anything might have gotten under the top. Do you smell it while using the topp burners as well?

There should be a one year warranty. You might need to get a service tech to check this out.

We have had a new Frigidair oven for a few months, the first time I used the oven broiler blue/white smoke started pouring out the oven vent and continued for 5 minutes after shutting it off. Having worked as an electrician for years I knew immediately it was wire insulation burning and informed the repairman of that when he came, but he also didn't leave it on very long and claimed the the smell is some chemical burning off the elements. It was and still is very obviously wire insulation burning and several months later is still giving me headaches and making me feel constantly ill as I have no choice but to use it every day and even with fans on and the doors open during -6 weather I feel horrible. I'm just about to take it apart myself since I can stand it no longer and Frigidair service is useless. It likely is going to result in a lawsuit, DO NOT BUY FRIGIDAIR IF YOU CARE ABOUT

That's funny that you mention this because we just bought the very same oven a few months ago and just installed it.I have used it only a few times and like yours it has the burning smell, I thought the same as you that its because it is new. Anyway when opening the door to put in a pizza I hear something rattle which sounded like it was in the door. I could not see anything, I open the bottom drawer and there was a black plastic piece about 1 inch long of something, not sure what is is, I thought may be the door latch but it looks OK. For the life of me I do not know what it is or where it came from. I have sent an e-mail to Sears and should hear from them soon.I do hope that it is not part of the oven (inside). I just cannot understand why things are made so cheap and flimsy these days. Mean while I suggest looking all inside your oven for any foreign plastic parts. I do hope that it is just part of the packaging and not something that goes to the oven.

I have a stove 61ehdo stainless Steele cooker which tonight has just stopped working I've had it approximately 7yrs . Oven rings etc won't turn on . I was in the middle of making dinner when this happened...

If you smelled a plastic burning smell you've burned some wiring somewhere. You would need to pull out the whole thing and start by looking at the back. I once had a dead mouse that had shorted across the relatively high voltage terminals common on most stoves. You should unplug the stove before doing anything like removing panels. Be very careful. Once you've found the problem you might need to call an electrician to fix it, depending on how brave you feel and where the problem is.

What to do when oven smells like burning plastic

new ovens do have a certian amount of "burn in" to do when there new best to heat up and cool off oven several times before actuall food use to remove any construction solvents and "cure" all the materials inside

also ck to make sure you removed all the shipping packing sometimes this gets left inside by accedent and smells something horrible when heated ( caution :: Foam degrades to cyanide deadly gas when heated!!!!)

Gas oven smell

Have you checked the temperature with a hand held or stand alone thermometer? First thing I would do is get a cheap oven thermostat, set the oven to 200 and make sure the oven is not being controlled.

This smell, does it sour the flavor of whatever you are baking, broiling whatever?

Sounds to me the oven might be over temperature, if it checks out against another thermostat is there any breakin procedures in your manual or cd?

Check that out, next have you called the oem?

If that goes no where, get a mailing address, ,get a frozen pancake or waffle if it is sticking to the food, cook it, wrap it hot in plastic rap then aluminum foil and mail it to them.

Once they take a wiff of it you will get some relief,

I am concerned you might have some kind gas that could prove to be unhealthy, so get this dealt with, the three suggestions above should get you an answer.
