Question about Philips GoGear HDD1830 MP3 Player

Open Question

Gogeat HDD82/17 will not charge

When trying to charge through laptop or socket, it will not take charge. The battery insignia use to appear on the screen but never charged. Now that doesn't even show up. It's a blank screen. I have been told I need a new battery by several people. This MP3 player has not been used much since it was purchased. If it is the battery, how do I replace it? Where do I purchase it? What type of battery do I buy? If a battery is not what is needed, how do I get it to work? I cannot find the booklet that came with it.

When you connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? If not then - The battery adapter or the adapter's power lead or the laptop's power socket could be faulty. Check power adapter's DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard. This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

POWER SUPPLY & BATTERY PROBLEM
If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. When you connect the power adapter into the laptop, does the power LED light up? Acer aspire operates with charger but battery is not charging. Why?

Most likely, it's either the laptop systemboard is bad...or it may be something as simple as the small connectors being bent so that the battery does not make a good connection.

The battery usually rests against small bendable connectors inside the laptop socket for the battery. These connector strips can sometimes get bent too far in to being in a flatter position so that the battery when inserted into the socket just does not make a good connection.

If you are sure that the battery is touching these connectors, then most likely the systemboard part of the laptop that controls the battery charging has stopped working.

If the laptop is no longer under warranty, and depending on the age of the laptop; I'd probably just leave it as is using just the AC adapter, and not repair it, as this will likely cost more to repair it than you want to pay when comparing this cost to purchasing a new laptop.

A BIOS update can resolve this issue and allow the battery to charge up to 100% in Windows. The BIOS update can be performed either before or after the symptom appears

This is one of the most common issues with Laptops. In fact the problem is with the Charging Component (socket/plug) on the laptop, when charger is plugged in and plugged out very frequently, this happens as the charging interface is being moved time and again and become loose. From your side, you can try cleaning the interface :

You can use a cleaning brush dipped in alcohol or acetone or similar cleaning solution to clean the socket.
If this isn't not successful and it boots up using a charged battery, then you are likely be necessary to replace the charging socket:

Good luck.

Problem charging my laptop. I have to wiggle and trick it to charge it.

Seems that either the power socket in the laptop has a loose connection, or the battery terminals are not having good contact with the metal prongs connecting it to the laptop charging circuitry.
A quick check to see if the power socket has a loose connection is to remove the battery & power the laptop only from the adapter. If the laptop works from the adapter without having to be wiggled, then the problem is not with the power socket. Instead, it is the battery contacts. Try to clean the contacts using a non-oily contact cleaner & see if this resolves the problem.
