Question about SanDisk ULTRA II 4GB Compact Flash Card Flash

1 Answer

I defraged my card and now it does not work in my camera

I have a Sandisn Ultra II 4gig CompactFlash card.  I thought i could defrag it by erasing it in my macs disk utilities application but now when i put the card in my camera it reads as a "CF Error".  Should i not have erased the info this way?  What can i do to repair this Flash card?  I would really appreciate any help.  Thank you

An older mac could have rearrange the byte order and thus render the card unusable. Have you tried to format the card in the camera? If this doesn't work contact sandisk for a replacement.

Well, if you want the built in feature, (that is, if you have Vista or above...i haven't tested it on XP and below) you can
  1. Go to start menu.
  2. Type in search "defragmenter".
  3. Select disc defragmenter.
  4. You can Analyze, Schedule and Defragment from here.
  5. Or go to this tutorial for detailed instructions.

Can I use a 4GB CompactFlash in my 5700 Nikon

According to Nikon it only supports up to 1GB CF cards, but as I suspected it had never been tested by them with larger CF cards (they weren't available above 500MB when the camera was released) I tried 2GB cards from various manufacturers and confirmed that they do not work.

I found that the best and most reliable performance with this particular Coolpix was with Sandisk Ultra cards. Ultra II (and above) offered no performance advantage with the camera itself, but if you use Ultra II then you will get speedier file transfers when using an external card reader. The camera will work with Ultra III but the camera writes noticeably slower to third generation Ultras than it does to the earlier versions.

The camera is no longer supported by Nikon and no firmware updates were ever released to extend CF capability.

SanDisk Ultra 11 CompactFlash Card 4Gb says "Card not Initalized"

You may need to format the card. There should be a Format command in the Setup menu. To be more specific, one would need to know which model of Finepix camera you refer to.

Got a card intializing msg!!!

The S7000 has always been known to have some problems with regular CompactFlash cards, with both power drains and limitations reported (the S7000 seems unable to handle CompactFlash cards above 2GB, as it doesn't support FAT32). I imagine it's possible that there are other potential problems associated with this.

It's usually recommended that, instead of using CompactFlash cards, you use either xD-Picture Cards or IBM/Hitachi Microdrives, which are both fully compatible with the S7000.

What else can I do with CompactFlash

You can copy images to a CompactFlash card from the camera's internal memory or copy images from the CompactFlash card to the camera's memory. Also, if you have a PCMCIA adapter and a computer with a Type II PCMCIA slot, you can access images stored on a CompactFlash card directly from your computer.
