Try booting into Safe-Mode and check if it happens again. If it doesn't go to Device Manager and remove any device with an exclamation mark. Also, try reinstalling the mouse driver.
If it doesn't work, backup your things and format the drive.

The operating system couldn't be located because a critical system driver is missing or contains errors. File:\Windows\System32\Drivers\SmartDefragDriver.sys Error Code: 0xc000021

You'll need your windows disk for this. Insert it and try to repair the install. Or better yet just reinstall windows as this is probably virus related anyway.

Windows failed coz of critical system driver is missing or corrupt.. volsnap.sys status 0xc0000098

That can be frustrating :( hope my solution below helps..

based on the current situation, I suggest trying the following steps: restart the computer and keep pressing F8; Use Last Known Good Configuration.

If the issue still occurs after that, I suggest testing if we can boot from a Windows disk. If so, please install Windows on another partition and access your important data. After backing up those data, you can use Windows disk to format the drive and reinstall Windows.

However, if we cannot boot from a Windows disk, the issue can be caused by incorrect BIOS settings or damaged hardware. I recommend contacting your computer manufacturer to check BIOS and hardware.

Thanks ...but I have tried that and it still loops back to 1. insert windows installation disc (which i don't have) 2. choose language and settings 3. click repair pOoter Windows failed to load...

You don't need your recovery disk to fix that, a simple XP install disk will do just fine - borrow one from a friend.
f you get 7 then - to prevent the problem from reappearing - you must do a full fresh install. But you will lose all your files and programs this way.

Boot up from the DVD drive with a windows bootup DVD, or boot up in recovery console, Ok, rename the file Wdf01000.sys to Wdf01000.old and copy new file from the Vista CD back to local drivers folder. then you will be back in business.

Creating recovery discs After setting up the computer for the first time, be sure to create a set of recovery discs of the full factory image. the recovery discs are used to start up (boot) the computer and recover the operating system and software to factory settings in case of system instability or failure.

Windows failed to load

There are a couple of ways to do this one of which is putting the laptop hard drive into an external drive enclosure and plugging it into another machine, the other is to create a UBCD4WIN boot disc to back up the data (this requires a little time to setup and you must have a Windows system disc (not a restore disc) to accomplish the CD creation).
