Question about Onkyo TX-NR1000 Receiver

Open Question

My Onkyo TX NR 1000 only remembers settings if fed power nonstop

I had the TX-NR1000 off and disconnected for two weeks while on vacation to protect it from power surges and such. When I reconnected the receiver,it worked fine for a couple hours and then the sound went away while watching/listening to Sat TV. The receiver remained on and all switching functions worked, only no sound (not even the test tone) from any source and to neither A or B speakers. I turned it off and on and sound came back for a minute and then it was gone again. On my second try it didn't come back at all. IF I set it for Direct Audio there is sound. So it would seem that the problem is in the DSP, what do you think? I have already tried: disconnecting all speakers and external sources, initializing the receiver, letting it connected for a couple of days, disconnected for a few days... I do have the Service Manual in case you want to point me to a section in there. Thank you! My receiver only remembers its settings when connected to a UPS and the power outage does not deplete the somewhat small UPS.

Your HDMI board has likely over heated, a known defect for this unit. A replacement board is available on E Bay for about $250 you ship bad one they ship replacement board which includes a small daughter board upgrade.

SOURCE: DSP Card (Onkyo TX DS787)

You should be able to get this directly from Onkyo. What is the problem tthat leads you to believe that the board needs to be replaced? Realize that the board could cost upwards of $100 or more.

SOURCE: dsp display on the 5.1 Onkyo receiver

Do you want to turn off the whole display?

There is a 3-way Dimmer on the front panel and the remote controller. The manual doesn't say if it will turn completely OFF.

My onkyo tx-nr 616 suddenly stop working, error pls check sp-cable, what could be the reason.

Either voice coil to the speaker is shorted, or the audio output section circuit to your receiver has shorted component/s at it. Disconnect all the speakers from the set, and check whether it shows any warning error like this. If dhows, the fault is within the receiver itself. If does not show any error message, switch off the set, and connect the speakers; one by one at a time, and try to find out which one is faulty. Be remember to switch OFF the power to the receiver, each time when one speaker box is connected. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. The readout on my NR1000 does not work, I have repalced the battries.

Welcome to FixYa.

There are only two things that we can do to the readout/computer problem of the NR 1000.
1. Make sure that the batteries has power. 2. Turn it on then press and hold the reset button for 5 to 10 seconds.

If it does not resolve the problem, the device has a mechanical error and servicing it is the best way.

Thank you for using Fixya. Have a great day.

I have an Onkyo TX-NR1000. After pushing very hard during a party one night, The Next day my kids turn it on and after it running for about an hour it went into protect mode then shut off. It had a smell...

This unit probably has separate output transistors which could be checked for shorts. I would also look for cracks in any of the transistors or IC's that may have overheated. Don't forget to check the speakers also as one or more of those could have a shorted voice coil that is feeding back to the amp.

Hey , with the Onkyo TX-NR1000 can I get started plugging two speaker while I gather enough money to buy the surround sound speakers. Also your opinion on speaker choices is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sure you can only connect 2 speakers. As for brand recommendation Polk audio makes some fine sounding speakers also Klipsch, Boston acoustics, too many to suggest. If you have a Best Buy near you they usually have a speaker room with many different brands that you can listen to. Though that doesn't mean you have to buy them their. I'm partial to Polk audio though. Polk has excellent customer service. That's going to be a tough decision you should really do some research on the internet for cost to quality references. Good luck. I hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.
