I have fading on the right hand side. Printer Dell 3100CN
Called Dell to try to fix problem, they said it was drum. I changed drum, twice, still have fading. Called Dell again, they said it was the power source, not enough power, so we gave it it's own outlet. Still had fading. Then they said it could be something blocking the laser. I said it didn't look like anything was wrong there either. They said buy a new printer. I researched online for possible solutions. Plenty of people have the same problem but no answer. It has nothing to do with colors printing and black not, or blue streaks..it has nothing to do with streaking at all. On every sheet it prints an inch is missing on the right hand side. How do I fix the fading? I have the same/similar problem. The right side has a faded black print. When printing in color, it is fine. EXCEPT when printing color, I sometimes get a clump of black on the paper on the bottom right corner. Dell told me to replace the "black ink distributer". I have not yet done so - debating on a new printer even though I just replaced the drum.

Well I got good news and bad news for you. The good news first, this problem is common and is fixable. It has to do with aligning the page sensors and the DRUM. Now for the bad news, remember what you said DELL told you? "They said buy a new printer" guess what, they were not kidding, the work involved with adjusting the sensors and the DRUM, will cost you the price of the printer alone in labor. It is a tedious job and requires adjusting three systems in unison. I hate to tell you this but, DELL was correct, but if you don't think so, try to shop around for a repair shop to work on the problem, but first get an estimate.
Drum, fuser and power supply can contribute to this issue. check if you have the printer connected to a surge protector or a UPS. Laser printers are picky about surge protectors especially if they are not designed to handle the voltage.
try connecting directly to the wall the issue should get progressively better.
if you can rub the images off the paper then it's the fuser.
This printer problem is usually fixed by one of the following two solutions.
1) The Cyan cartridge is not seated 100% correctly. If the locking handle is not seated correctly, the printhead is obstructed from properly developing the the black developer at the extream right hand side. When reseated, the light can then see past the handle and place the image properly.
2) The printhead is dirty ( usually toner dust) and needs to be cleaned. To clean the printhead, open the front cover, pull back on the blue handle on the right hand side. This opens the cover to the cleaning wand on the right hand side of the printer. Gently pull the cleaning wand ALL the way out, and then slide back in ALL the way. Do NOT just move the wand back and forth. this will just push the debris around. The wand is designed to move across the printhead in only one direction. When you pull it out to its full extent, it is lifted up so that when you push it back, it is actually above the glass, not on it. When it reaches its full inward position, it drops back down to go over the glass again from left to right.
Make sure that you change this cleaning pad each time you change the imaging unit ( a new pad is included with the new drum).
Important note: If cleaning the printhead works, but then the print fades out again after a short period of usage, a more serious problem exist in which one of the photo developers is leaking. This is not a user replaceable part. The color of the defective developer would correspond to the color of the cleaning pad after cleaning.
