Toughbook CF-T4 purchased used as is. Had no hard drive. Put in a working laptop harddrive, Setup doesnot see the drive in the system and when I boot to Ubuntu live to install linux on it, there are no usable partitions for the install. It is as if the drive is not in the system!

>> operating system not found

Good. It means that the hard-drive was recognized, but that it failed to find the "boot-sectors" on the hard-drive.

Insert a Windows 98 or 2000 or XP or Vista CD-ROM,
disconnect the hard-drive, and reboot. Does it start to "boot" from the CD-ROM? If so, that's good.

As a "counter-theft" measure, most laptops do *NOT* have removable CMOS-batteries (unlike desktops). So, a stolen laptop with a power-on password cannot be "defeated" by removing the CMOS battery.

So, if you bought it from the police, show the laptop to an officer, and ask them what password he/she used when he/she used the laptop.

Boot it, and enter BIOS-setup (F1 or F2 or DEL, depending on the model). It *SHOULD* detect the hard-drive, and show you the size (in gigabytes) of the hard-drive.

If it does not, either the laptop is BORKEN, or the hard-drive is dead.

If it does, then boot Ubuntu, and use a software-tool to "create partitions" or "format" the hard-drive. After that, you should be able to install Ubuntu.

Hi, came across this post as I was looking for drivers for my friends CF-27EB.. I'd wiped the drive to upgrade it to 2000 r XP. after wipeing the drive it would not find the cd drive, windows does not recognise the usb cd driver that comes with make a long story short, after trying several work arounds I was able to xcopy to the drive useing a usb to ide adapter. Kinda worked, hence me here looking for drivers. While takeing a break from looking I relised the usb adapter would work with one of the cd/dvd players in my tower, worked!I To do this you'll need boot disks as it won't find the cd drive tll windows generic drivers are loaded. if you can't make your own you can find the at allboot, from 95 to XP. I used the XP disks, takes 6 floppies. Got XP on the CF-27EB. now if I can just get it to turn on the wireless card!! lol
Good luck all!
P.S. the usb cd drive that came with it is a TEAC 224( according to teac's lists of drivers it was oridgenaly ment for dell comps.)

I think you mean the bios is password protected, if thats the case you have to remove the little (watch) cmos battery if it has one.

How to wipe clean CF-19 hard drive

If the Panasonic Toughbook CF19 has a Hard Disk Drive,
then you should be trying to wipe it by booting from an
external USB Optical (cdrom) drive.
You have to enter the BIOS by pressing the F2 function key,
and set USB CDROM as the first bootable device.
Then save and exit the bios.
The external optical (cdrom) will now boot
with the proper bootable media.
If you have a HIREN bootable CD then one of the
tools will allow you to WIPE and RE-FORMAT the
internal hard disk drive.
Good Luck.

Swapped out hdd cf-52 nothing happening

When you swapped out the Hard Disk Drive
of the Panasonic Toughbook CF52 it is very
importatnt that you did not "hot" swap the HDD
but that you turned off the unit with a full shutdown
and unplugged it as well.

Once you removed the Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
I am assuming that you replaced the drive with
another drive that had a proper operating system
already installed. If not, then of course nothing
happened since you replaced the HDD with a blank
or unformatted HDD.

One way to verify if the replacement Hard Drive
is recognized by the Toughbook is to go into
the BIOS by pressing the F2 function key and
checking the size or capacity of the replacement
Hard Disk Drive. If it shows the proper value,
then the HDD is recognized at the Hardware Level.

If it shows HDD as None or Zero then the replacement
HDD is NOT recognized and you have to try a different
drive which is functional.

Good Luck!

Windows xp installion does not see my hard drive on Panasonic CF-74

Just a thought but are you using XP Pro SP2 or SP3?

In my experience, only XP Service Pack 3 will see your
Hard Disk Drive, not XP Service Pack 2.

Panasonic Toughbook won't load Windows XP CD

You can check to see if the hard drive is dislodged, but other than that I don't know what to tell you. If you know the drive is functioning correctly then your motherboard is probably dead.

Toughbook CF-18 Supervisor Passwd

Toughbook CF18, CF-18
How to remove the BIOS Supervisor Password:

Open all covers and openings. Remove hard drive and battery. Remove bottom of notebook. Many many tiny screws.
Now look towards the rear of the notebook. You will see 2 plugs both have a red and black wires. The one with the much smaller wires and connector is the BIOS battery. Use a pair of needle nose pliers and remove this plug.

Leave it off for 5-15 minutes.

Leave the BIOS battery plug off. Replace the laptop's main battery. Leave the hard drive out. Turn the unit over and turn it on.
Press F2 when the screen comes up. POOF! NO PASSWORD!

Go to Security and disable the password. Save configuration. Turn off the notebook. Replace the small connector. Turn it back over and turn it back on. Press F2 and verify that there is no password. Go to Security and Disable the password again. Save the configuration.
Put the bottom back on. You're done.

Your hard drive is now dead. Replace it. When a supervisor password is used it locks the hard drive to that password. There is NO WAY to recover the hard drive. It is called an ATA security password. Without the ATA password the hard drive is completely useless.
