Sewing machine slows to a stop.

When I begin sewing everything seems normal but after a few minutes the needle speed decreases gradually and eventually stops. It smells like burning rubber. This machine is only foot pedal controlled (I think).

I am searching for similar answers and the answer above seems extreme. I would think its possible you can burn up bearings, but what about the belt first? (hence rubber smell), sounds it's too tight, like other's answer.

When was the last time you oiled it?

Sewing machines need regular oiling as you use them - it sounds like you have or are close to seizing the bearings.

In future, when you smell burning and a machine that should operate at full speed slows down - stop, don't persist in using it.

It clearly has something wrong with it.

Your users manual should cover oiling the machine - there are predetermined points at which you drop the sewing machine or 3-in-1 oil into. Only a few drops are necessary, but you should oil it every few hours of use.

My machine is slowing down during sewing and then goes back to normal.

If your sewing machine is slowing down during sewing and then goes back to normal, there are a few possible causes to consider:
  1. Tension Issues: If the tension on the thread is too tight or too loose, it can cause the machine to slow down or even stop. Make sure the thread is properly threaded through the machine, and adjust the tension as needed.
  2. Jammed or Dirty Bobbin: If the bobbin is jammed or dirty, it can cause the machine to slow down or stop. Remove the bobbin and clean any debris or lint that may have accumulated, and make sure the bobbin is properly inserted.
  3. Dull or Damaged Needle: A dull or damaged needle can cause the machine to slow down or skip stitches. Replace the needle with a new one and make sure it's the correct size and type for the fabric you're sewing.
  4. Motor Issues: If the motor is failing or overheating, it can cause the machine to slow down or stop. Check the motor and make sure it's properly lubricated and functioning correctly.
  5. Machine Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance are important to keep your sewing machine running smoothly. Clean the machine and oil it according to the manufacturer's instructions to keep it running at peak performance.
If none of these solutions solve the problem, it may be best to have the machine inspected by a professional to diagnose and repair any more serious issues.

I have a Consew 206rl and it won't sew on double layers of leather but sews fine on single layers. What adjustments can I make

Sewing on double layers of leather can be challenging, and it's important to have the machine properly adjusted to handle the thickness. Here are some adjustments you can try:
  1. Needle size: Make sure you are using the correct needle size for the thickness of your leather. A larger needle may be required to penetrate the layers.
  2. Tension: Adjust the tension of the upper thread. If the tension is too tight, it can cause the needle to break or skip stitches. If it's too loose, the stitches may be uneven.
  3. Presser foot pressure: You mentioned you have already adjusted the presser foot pressure, but to clarify, turning the adjustment screw clockwise will increase the pressure, while turning it counterclockwise will decrease it. You may need to increase the pressure for thicker materials.
  4. Stitch length: Increase the stitch length for thicker materials. A shorter stitch length can cause the machine to struggle to sew through the layers.
  5. Speed: Slow down the speed of the machine when sewing on thicker materials. This will help the machine to handle the thickness and prevent skipped stitches or broken needles.
If none of these adjustments work, you may need to take the machine to a professional for further inspection and repairs.

I just bought a Singer Quantum 9960. I really need the needle to be in the UP position *automatically* when I stop sewing. How do I get it to stop with the needle in the up position?

C.NEEDLE UP-DOWN / SLOW BUTTON Pressing this button when the machine is stopped, will change the needle position from down to up or from up to down. While sewing, by pressing this button, machine will sew in slow speed. Pressing this button again, the speed will return.
needle-kaa2eddyud1bdlvevsz1mh4m-2-0.png I did not see in the user manual where this function will occur automatically ... the button needs to be pushed manually

Slow sewing regardless of speed setting

I'm thinking that the problem is in the foot control
take the foot control to a sewing machine repair shop and have it checked out
you say it appears aftermarket--probably is to replace a faulty OEM unit

My sewing machine started to sew slow and seem like it is working hard. Won't sew normal. Hasn't been that long since it was last serviced/oiled. Any suggestions?

Slow is due to friction in the shuttle drive and key moving bars and joint. Apply few drops of petrol/kerosene and run for few minutes. Then apply normal lubricating oils meant for machines.

My Janome magnolia is 3 years old. Last week I was sewing and everything jammed, needle went to side and broke. It was trying to run but couldn't. I took bobbin out and cleaned it, oiled everything, where...

Try the process of elimination. Take out the needle, take off the needle plate, take out the bobbin case. Run the machine. Does if run full speed? You might have to let the machine run for about 5 minutes. If it runs slow or you hear it slow down, you might have a bad connecting link between the needle bar and the main shaft counter weight. They seize up sometimes. (Shop Repair).
