Ah the PS3, a hive of problems with that little gadget. Well this problem is simple, check the connecting wires on the rear panel, make sure the cords are properly connected to the appropriate ports, also make sure they are free of any dirt or muck. If this didn't help, you may want to return the unit with your warranty card and exchange it for a new one. Sony hasn't completely finished designing the PS3 yet, in a few years they will complete a prototype of the newer version, just like what they did with the PS2, remember it used to be fat? Then came the Slimline which proved to be more reliable. That's what will happen to the PS3 soon.

Glad the solution about holding in the power button for 5 seconds and letting it go helped. Wish it didn't take you so many tries though. :)
Please rate me when you get the chance. Thanks.
