Question about HP Compaq dc5000 Small Form Factor PC Desktop

HP dc5000 won't start. Green light on front is dim and flashing.

At work I have an HP dc5000 desktop pc. After a storm and apparent power failure, the pc won't start. The green light on the front is flashing (it is dim, but is flashing) at a quick pace. Nothing is running at all - no internal sounds what so ever - no fans running, no processors running - nothing at all. My IT guy is working on a big project so my pc is on the back burner, meanwhile I can't work. Any suggestions? Please advise. Thank you.

I'm inclined to agree with solutions 1,2 &3. I think it is a power supply problem, as well.

I have to wait for IT to look into it. We only have one guy and he is in the midst of relocating 17 PC's and making some repairs to cables from some office construction, so I am on the back burner.

The PC is plugged into a surge protector, but it is an inexpensive strip kind. I was to have received a good back up type, but am still waiting for that.

As for solution #4, nothing happens when I hold in the power button. The little green light continues to blink or flash dimly. It only goes out when I unplug the PC. I have tried plugging it into other outlets, but there is no change. The machine does not power up at all.

I just hope the IT guy doesn't just decide it is quicker and easier to scrap it. Last year, I had a windows crash, so he took out my hard drive and put it into another PC as a slave, so there was a C & D drive. The slave or D drive is where I store most of my data. I hope he can remove it and put it into yet another PC so I can work. I can't work right now. The only PC available for me to use today as a temp is not set up on our complete network, so I can't access files that I need from the shared drive.

I printed out all of the posts and the article for our IT guy. If he doesn't get to it by tomorrow, I will have to either bring my son to the office to fix it or take it home and have him fix it. I can't be without a PC 2 days in a row.

I'll post a diagnosis and fix when I'm up and running again.

    Thanks all!

Hold down the power button until the machine completely turns off. Then turn the machine back on and let me know what happens.

Thank you for replying to me. Knowing what is happening when you hold the button I would have to agree it is most likely a failed power supply.

Do you have it plugged into a good surge protector? Was it turned on or off?
Likely cause could be a failed power supply. Use this article to help diagnose the problem. You can have the power supply load tested by a reliable local tech very quickly, and they are relatively inexpensive to replace...
In the meantime, if you have access to another system, you could take the hard drive from yours and plug it in as slave on the other system and get back to work until yours is repaired...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

The power at the start is red and not green how can i know what is the problem is it the power supply or others please answer me.....

Power LED flashes Red,
once every two seconds.
OR
Power LED flashes Red four
times, once every second,
followed by a two second
pause.

Would this be the symptom?

If so, then yes, the Power Supply is bad.

What causes this?

1) A large percentage is due directly to the fact, that the computer is dirty inside, as well as the inside of the Power Supply.

2) A smaller percentage is that the Power Supply is a low quality unit, installed by the computer manufacturer.

Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, anti-Static precautions observed.

Using a can of compressed air for computers on a regular basis as needed, would help prevent Power Supply failure.

Is the dc5000 the Small Form Factor, or the Micro-Tower, style?
(SFF style looks like a Pizza Box)

Will look up Power Supply replacement for you if you wish, and information on replacing it.

Green light just flashes on motherboard, will not turn on. We plugged in a usb camera and the computer died.

first unplug the cam . if the unit works the usb might be bad if not you may want to look at the front usb board on this system and see if it is damaged.
