I am working on a dell inspiron 1501. This child's computer is full of virus' and and I need to uninstall the xp2008 antivirus program that is on it. However it will NOT let me uninstall. No matter what I've tried... it rejects the uninstall. This is worse than Norton. How do I get the darn uninstall program to work?
You are right, it IS worse than Norton.
The reason you can't remove it is because you have been infected with a bit of malware posing as an antivirus program.
There are a number of spyware/malware tools that can help with this, but the one that I've had the most luck with regarding this specific infector is Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link.
If you unfamiliar with how to use Malwarebytes, or tools like it, follow the instructions here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-removal/remove-antivirus-xp-2008
Good luck!
For starters the program you are trying to remove is FAKE!! this is a malware program that doesn't function and tries to get you to "Buy" into it's features. however it will not give you anything in return. not only lulling the user into a false sense of security but often once downloaded also further infect the system
I tend to deal with Malware & spyware using a piece of software called SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY which has consistantly been good and has more than just malware removal tools.
this can be downloaded here http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
for an in-depth specific "how to remove" guide see here

You need to be careful though, as not all online offers live up to their name. To distinguish genuine spyware removal from the fake ones, you need to know exactly what a spyware removal is. A good online spyware removal program offers automatic updates to ensure that your PC is constantly protected from any malicious attacks. It is also often bundled with antivirus applications so that the job is done all at once.
I dont know if you canget it on the internet but if you can run this program its free from malewarebytes. I have had good success with this one

I tried bleepingcomputer...they wanted me to use spydoctor. However, since I'm doing this child a favor, I wanted freeware programs to use as much as I can. So I used the spybot search and destroy. I don't know whether it removed the antivirus 2008 yet but I will keep working on it.
Thanks for your wisdom. If I were at my home, I would strip the whole computer and start over but I'm not. I did download AVG Free as she had NO antivirus software on her computer except for that 2008 antivirus stuff. Wow...I had no idea anyone could have as many trojans on their computer as this child. I will be teaching her a whole lot of things before she gets on this computer again. Thanks.
