Inspiron 6400 touchpad woes

The touch pad for my dell laptop has recently been acting as a "clicker"--a touch on the pad will have the same effect as clicking on the left-hand button. I do NOT want my touch pad to have this function, but I can't find how to turn it off, nor did I turn it on. VERY ANNOYING. I keep "selecting" things unintentionally with troublesome consequences.

Please help!

How do I do that? And how do I reinstall without a touchpad?

  • guido_benini May 26, 2009

    Vista

  • guido_benini May 26, 2009

Synaptics is not on the list.

  • guido_benini May 26, 2009

    Not there.

  • guido_benini May 26, 2009

    Well, that's not there either!

  • guido_benini May 27, 2009

Well, I went there, downloaded the driver, installed it, restarted, and nothing has changed. Should I uninstall and reinstall???

    Hi again.
Don't worry your touchpad will still work after you have uninstalled the touchpad drivers and utility, it will just go back to basics like any normal mouse.
Before i tell you where to go to uninstall it can you tell me whether you are using XP or Vista please.

    Regards

    Hi.
Ok, go to the control panel, in control panel click on programs and features, select uninstall a program. A list will generate with all the programs installed, look down the list for "Synaptics" this is the touchpad drivers and utility, click on it and at the top of that window you will uninstall, just click on that and follow the instructions (basically its just asking your permission). Once its done that restart the PC and see how that is for you.

If you need it, here is the link to Dell support, i have chosen your operating system for you, just download the Synaptics touchpad drivers >>>>>>>>

    http://support.dell.com/support/download...

If by any chance you cannot see Synaptics in the list post back.

Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!

Ok, try looking for dell touchpad
The synaptics driver recognizes the system is a Dell. If you still can't find it please post back.

    Ok.
In the search bar type msconfig, a system configuration window will appear, click on the startup and look down the list for Apoint, uncheck that box and click ok, then restart the PC.
Let me know how you you get on.

    Ok,
Lets try a different way, and its probably going to work! (hopefully)

Go here to Dell support and download and reinstall the touchpad drivers, this should reset the touchpad settings back to defaults.

Try going to Control Panel - Hardware and sound - mouse. Once you have the menu for the mouse open, go to device settings. Click settings, and all of the advanced controls for the functions of your mouse pad can be found there.

Tap to click does not work dell inspiron 1501

Tap to click is the feature of the touchpad driver. Uninstall any existing touchpad drivers and then restart the computer.
Go to www.support.dell.com enter the computer service tag and get the drivers for the touchpad from there. Also update the BIOS of your computer to the most recent version. In most cases a part replacement is not needed and the issue should be fixed.

Eratic movement of cursor using touch pad

Sounds like you have a touchpad malfunction. If its an older laptop, I would recommend replacing it. Not worth the hassle of trying to install a new touchpad...
