Advent 8315 disc drive not working

Bought Advent 8315 notebook new. Tried disc drive for 1st time and doesn't work. Tried to burn photo files to disc, view photo files from disc and install Microsoft software (Office). The 1-year warrranty only just expired by a month so the store I bought the notebook from were no help at all.

Purchased registry cure software online (RegCure) but it doesn't solve the problem.

Can anyone offer me any advice on how to fix this or potential repair cost? I've been advised it may just be faulty drive and simply buying new notebook may be best option.

Thanks, Sean.

Hi. Thanks very much for responding.

I've checked that the dvd gallery is enabled. Not sure how to check jumper setting etc. Need to subscribe to the other article to be able to read through. Not done that yet as already purchased software and subscribed to other sites with no success - cost is getting close to what repair cost probably is!!

    Sean

Here's a description of your drive, though the device manager should be able to give you the exact model #. And here's a link to a support site that has drivers, manuals, etc for your laptop. Here are a few steps to work through to confirm that the drive itself is bad. I think since it never worked you should check the jumper settings and cables at least, to make sure things are connected properly. I'd stay away from registry cleaners, as they can cause more harm than good. Also see number 13 in this link to check that you've enabled the dvd gallery in vista.
On the other hand, the drive could be faulty. A local computer tech will be able to test it for you.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

Here's another link to a free site that will have general info and specific troubleshooting for your cd drive. It's a little dated but has essentially reliable info.

To check the jumpers, if your drive even has them, you'd have to open the laptop up and get at the insides...

You could try uninstalling the drive from the device manager, then rebooting, and the system will discover it and install it anew. Sometimes if there are device conflicts of some kind this will repair the installation. See this MS link to check on the drive., and this link to check on/update the drivers.

If the drive simply doesn't spin discs, or open the door, check the power cable. If it powers up and checks out ok in device manager, look to software settings as the problem. Search the web for a service manual to familiarize yourself with the insides before you go rooting around there.

You can easily replace that drive, I should think. I don't know why someone would suggest buying a new notebook because of a bad optical drive. if you're not comfortable working on the components, I suggest you take it in to a reliable local tech and have them troubleshoot it. It should be a fairly simple diagnosis and fix...

Hello trying to upgrade my HCT HBR-1000BP Blu-ray Player firmware and can not figure out how. No support on HCT website. Would be thankful for any help

Where are you having a problem? I found directions on: http://hcthk.com/mall/s02.php . There were two links, one with directions and one with an arrow for downloading the needed file.

The firmware is in a zip file. First extract the files from the compressed archived. (For a Windows OS, right click on the folder and select Extract All.) If needed, open the new uncompressed folder and put a blank CD-R or CD-RW in your optical burner drive. Burn the two files from the extracted folder to the CD (drag and drop will work for any version of Windows (XP-7).) Do not include the folder, just the files. Then finalize the disc (close the session). If you are asked to format the disc, choose a mastered burn (single-session). In Windows Explorer, you can do this by right-clicking on the optical drive in Computer (My Computer) or from the menu for the drive when you double-click on it. (Alternatively, if you have your system set to finalize on eject, then choose Eject. This setting is in the drive's Properties (the Recording tab).)

Eject the disc from your computer and turn on the HBR-1000BP. Place the CD that you burned in the player. When the disc is recognized, press Play. If that doesn't work, try entering the System Menu and choosing System Update with your remote. Do not power down the unit during the update; a power failure during the update might leave you with an unusable player.

If this doesn't work, check if the Blu-ray Player reads any CDs. If it doesn't, try cleaning the laser lens with a CD/DVD lens cleaner. Then try again. The Blu-ray uses a different laser. If no disc works and the lens cleaner doesn't help, the CD/DVD laser has a tracking (alignment) issue or another problem. You'll need to get the optical drive in the HBR-1000BP replaced or fixed.

If it does read a different CD, then check if your optical disc burned and was finalized correctly. Can another optical drive read it? Try burning the files to CD on another optical drive. (If you are using an external optical drive burner, make sure that the computer is not running on battery power. Plug the external drive into two USB ports if it isn't self-powered.)

I hope this helps.

One of the best sources for these types of things is online at a site called newegg.com. You can search based on the Manufacturer and model number of your Laptop. If that fails you try the Manufacturers website, they will sometimes list where replacements can be purchased or well on themselves.

If this is happening it's usually a sign that your drive is failing as it can no longer read the media type, but just double check, if you are using Nero that you havent got DVD highlighted in the start smart as the media to burn to.
