Question about Garden
My wife brought home a mower (Briggs and Stratton 550) that has a bad coil. How would I replace this?
Remove the cover with the recoil starter, the coil is mounted next to the flywheel by two 5/16" screws.
Before removing the old coil find something around the garage that is the same thickness as the space in between the coil and the flywheel, its easiest to use something non ferrous such as a piece of aluminum beer can doubled over.
Remove the screws and coil, unplug the ground wire from the old coil and connect it to the new one. Bolt the new coil in place, you must space the coil .030 away from the flywheel, use the shim you made earlier, I use a piece of brass shim stock .030 for this but almost anything will work so long as it is the correct thickness. Re-install the cover, connect the plug wire and give it a try.
