Question about Ariens 34 In. Zoom Series Riding Mower
My machine is quite a few years old but works well except that it won't stay in anything higher than 2nd gear. Now that the season is over I want to get it ready for the next winter season.
I am not an expert but can do a few things. I can't find anything obvious but I am wondering if a worn friction wheel (the plate with the rubber on it that in turn drives the wheels) can cause this problem. It appears to be somewhat worn and cracked.
You are close, mowers that use a planitary and platter drive will pop out of gear when the wheel gets cracked too bad, it makes the wheel bounce rapidly and rattles the whole planetary mechanism until it pops out, Snapper uses a similar system with similar issues when the wheel goes bad.
