Hi i am sagha a camera repairer from mumbai, i have gone through such problems much oftenly,in your case i think it is the internal problem with the flex board inside the lens which is multitwisted on metal plate after prolonged use becomes stiff & brittle and creates hairline cracks on the pcb which in turn breaks the tiny tracks & leads to malfunction at 135 mm.

If your camera has a viewfinder diopter adjustment (small wheel a the side of the viewfinder) try moving this up and down to see if that corrects the problem

It sounds like the circuit board flex has gone bad, It folds back and forth when you zoom the lens, And needs to be replaced by a repair shop and readjusted. Tony

There is a minimal focusing distance for all lenses. If you move closer to the subject than that distance then the camera won't focus on it. Check you lens manual for minimal focusing distance. It is 11 inches for Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM, for example.

18-55 lens not doing auto-focus

I offer you to buy Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens. This gives very good performance for your studio work and specially for portre. It has Image Stabilization and Ultrasonic Motor. Other professional lens are very expensive. It has red ring.

Scratched front lens element

Well, you cannot buy the front element by itself. The whole front optic set comes as a unit. You can call Canon USA, ask for parts,

The part number you are inquiring on is: CY1-2800

Have you taking any pictures with the lens? usually it takes quite a bit of damage to effect images. The rear optics are the more sensitive glass on all lenses

Autofocus on my Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 EF IS fails

Hello. First, check the contacts on the lens mount--you're looking for bent pins, oxidized(odd-colored) metal, damaged contact points, etc. The camera must communicate reliably with the internal circuitry of the lens unit. If there is any dirt, moisture, intermittent contact going on, the sensitive focusing electronics will be effectively blinded. If all is fine with the contacts, then the problem lies with the circuits in the lens that provide critical focusing data to the camera. Movement of certain parts causes electrical changes to occur at a calibrated rate--if the camera loses connection, it can't tell if the lens is actually adjusting. You'll have to send the lens in for repair--http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportIndexAct. This address should get you started.--Hope I helped!---Rick
