    and 1mre thing in regisry

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem]
"NtfsDisableCompression" its value is set to 1
when i changed it to 0 and restarted my computer its value is automatically changing to 1 again
i guess this is the reason behind the prb. if the value is 0 means i gues i'l b able to compress but y its automatically changing..
    any way to prevent it

  • playboycenso May 30, 2009

hey thnx lol for the help what i did was i manually deleted the registry
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem] "NtfsDisableCompression"
and created a new 1 with the same name and set the binary value to 0 and restarted the computer and now its working.
thnx man the prob is solved now

There are a number of reasons for compression to be disabled, but check these two things:
The cluster size for that volume:
Compression is not supported on cluster sizes greater than 4KB
By default NTFS cluster size for Windows Server 2003 never exceeds 4KB

This one is less suspect, but another registry entry that MUST exist
for 'Disk Cleanup' compression to take place:
HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerVolumeCachesCompress Old Files

Other thoughts:
The command line "compact" utility can be used to disable compression for a folder and, optionally, it's subs. This might be a suspect if it were invoked at any time on that volume.

PLEASE READ:
Before you invoke compression on a volume it's best to read this "Best Practices" article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/251186/EN-US/. Compression can have a detrimental effect on performance if used improperly.

Friggin backslashes didn't pass thru. Let's try this:
    (Second comment re: registry entry)

    "HKLM\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\VolumeCaches\\Compress Old Files"

FYI - Cluster size is included in your chkdsk statistics.

i.e.: 512 bytes in each allocation unit.

Since you have no restore points, I'd remove monitoring on the drive you wish to compress and then try the hard drive compression. Since its currently being monitored, this may be why you can't compress the drive. You can choose to monitor all or some hard drives as part of system restore. Hope this gets you going. Good luck.

Assuming Vista came with your machine, or you already had XP installed when you upgraded, NTSF must already be the format of the hard drive therefore, preventing you from compressing a drive that's already been compressed.

You compress individual folders by right clicking on the folders themselves and select "Send To" and then select "Compressed Folder". Forgive my confusion earler, I thought you were trying to convert from FAT32 to NTSF.

It will be stored in the same directory the source file is stored i.e. if folder is in "My Documents" the "zip" file will also be stored in "My Documents". it will have the same name, only it will have a 'zipper' on the folder and be in the format .zip

If you're talking about the folders inside your Program Files folder, you can't run most applications from a zip file or compressed folder.

If you only have 90MB free space, unload all unecessary files. Prior to trying to compress the drive, there's a disk cleanup option. There must be files either in Recycle bin waiting to be deleted or temp files to be deleted. Disk Cleanup will show how much space can be saved by deleting these files. To do a Hard Drive compression, there needs to be sufficient free space on your Hard Drive to perform the compression. After running Disk Cleanup if you still have only 90MB of free space, either get a flash drive to move some files over or back up files onto a CD or DVD prior to deleting them from your Hard Drive. Hope this answers your post.

Taught you how to compress files, couldn't compress all you wanted due to lack of free space on hard drive (no fault of mine) and I get "Thanks for trying"?

Administrator password Dell Inspiron 1720

If the system is asking for an administrator password in Windows and you are wanting to format and reinstall the system, then the password shouldn't be an issue. Most inspiron systems are equipped with a PC Restore partition CTRL+F11 just after the Dell Splash Screen should enable the restore process. If PC Restore doesn't work, then boot to the XP CD and format the NTFS partition and install Windows XP clean. If you have Windows Vista, the PC Restore is run from the F8 Boot menu. If no restore partition is accessible in Vista, then again Boot to the Vista DVD and format the NTFS partition and install VIsta.

How do i enable ntfs compression in vista x64

You don't want to compress your drive... it's really not recommended. And you can't de-compress it once compressed.

I will suggest buying a new drive; Harddrives are rather cheap, and cloning utilities will make the transfer of your data eazy peazy.

Unable to enable ntfs compression in vista (hard disk-"all drives

Compress an entire NTFS volume
warning.png You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

bullet.png Double click on My Computer on the desktop.
bullet.png Right-click the volume you want to compress, and then click Properties.
bullet.png In the General tab, click to select the Compress Volume to save disk space check box, and then click OK.
bullet.png In “Confirm Attribute Changes”, click the option you want.

You may have already attempted this but Maybe not....
This error usually happens in Linux but occasionally within windows.
My apologies if this does not help.
