Is it "intuitively obvious to the casual repairman-me" how to re-place it? Do I have to remove anything or does it just snap on to something at each end?

It says clear the carrier jam and press arrow to continue. There is nothing to clear. It makes a loud noise when you press start? It it worth taking it somewhere to be fixed?

No, might as well buy a new one rather than have it fixed. You can try cleaning the encoder strip. It's a clear plastic strip that runs though the printer cartridges. I clean mine with a light alcohol on an old T-shirt (or other soft cloth). clean one side then move it to the other and clean that side. But be easy, the encoder strip is a pain to put back on if you pull it off (and it does come off easy).

I'm holding in my hand a clear plastic band/strip approx 14"long and 1/4" width which came out from the inside of my Dell all in one 924 printer. Can you tell me how to get it back in place in the printer?

It can be done, but not without a lot of PAIN. You say it's in your hand. This is the ENCODER STRIP. It runs the length of the printer left to right. It is hooked on the left onto a small metal tab of the chassis, and on the right onto a spring-loaded tab to make it flex. In between the tabs, it sits in a channel on the rear of the in carriage. Its job is to tell the chip in the carriage where it is from left to right at allm times. If it were still in the channel you could, with a little effort, reattach the left and right ens to the chassis. However, it will be difficult to get into the channel now, because it cannot be twisted, and it must be on the correct side facing you. You've nothing more to lose by trying, but a service charge at a shop (IF they would attempt it in the first place)would cost as much or more than some new inkjet printers. If you succeed, be sure to clean the strip with alcohol on a Q-tip. Clean both sides and allow to dry before testing. Good Luck!

Dell 924 printer

There could be 4 possibilities.

1. Ink cartridges lids are open which is not allowing cartridges to move freely.
2. Ink cartridges carriage will not move from its original position(left) when front cover is opened
3. Encoder strip is Dirty.
4. Encoder strip is Out of position.

Solution:
1. Open the front cover and check if ink cartridges lids are properly snapped in.

2. Turn the printer off and pull out the power cable from power socket, open the front cover and manually center the ink cartridges carriage.
Clean the metallic rod inside the printer using WD40 or Kleenex from Left corner to right corner properly.

3. Cleaning the encoder strip:
a. printer should be off and disconnected from power.
b. open the front cover.
c. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer and you can move the cartridges carriage to clean the strip completely.
d. Note: The encoder strip is a narrow band of clear plastic and can be difficult to see without direct lighting running parallel to metallic rod.
e. Close the printer and try again to print.

4. Repositioning the Encoder strip.
a. Remove the power cord from the printer.
b. Open the front cover.
c. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
d. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
e. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.
f. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.
g. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.
h. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.
i. Re-connect the power cord to the printer and try again to print.

Some plastic stick came out of my dell 924 all in one printer

The plastic strip prevents your ink cartridges from clanking from side to side. All you need to do is open up the prineter and hook one side of the strip to a metal hook (lip) on the left side. Than put the strip through the back side of the ink cartridges. Lastly, hook the right side of the strip to a hook spring located on the right side of the printer. Note: the spring should not be attached to the metal lip that is to the left of it. Good luck!
