Moisture/Ice build-up in Refrigerator

Fridge runs great in winter, as soon as it gets warmer and more humid, water/condensation builds up on fridge ceiling around what looks like a vent or something and freezes. More like frost than ice. Drip tray fills about every 3-4 days. Freezer works fine. Fridge still stays cold. Refrigerator is in a basment. Karen

Not exactly, but I'm sure it's pretty high. I do run a dehumidifier in summer. The humidity/heat I'm sure contributes to the problem.

  • kbiz May 26, 2009

Temp setting is at 6.5 out of 9.

Temp inside reads about 32 degrees F (I didn't realize it was that cold.)

I also noticed the water that drips from the ceiling is freezing on glass shelves, but the liquids, soda, beer, are not even slushy

Should I try raising the temp?

    Thanks Alot!!

Door seals are still good. The unit is about 15 years old, but it's a spare refrigerator. Used mostly for a second freezer.

I turned it down to about 5.5 and the inside ice is thawing. Will post back tomorrow when the temp stabilizes.

  • kbiz May 28, 2009

    Ok,

Temperature is up to about 38 degrees now. Much better.

Still a little bit of frost/moisture around the air vent coming from freezer but not like before. I can live with this, might even raise it a bit more. The freezer may be too cold as well but my temp setting knob for the freezer is broken so can't adjust it.

I broke it the other day trying to lower it, it may have been frozen!?

    Thanks for you help.

    You really helped alot.

Ok first of all. the refrige is in the basement. do you know what the relative humidity in the basement is?

you can check this with a humidity gauge.

how low do you have your thermostat set to. possibly trying to come up a few degrees might assist in combating this issue. put a thermometer in the fridge and keep an eye on the temp

Water is puddeling under the left side and front of the fridge. its dry and dusty underneath. water line for ice maker has been disconnected for years. cant figure where the water is coming from

You have a side by side or a undermounted freezer? I am having the same problem with mine. Take a look into the bottom of the freezer, there is probably ice building up on the bottom of it under the bottom self or basket. It seems if the refrigerator door is opened frequently and it is moderately or very humid in your home the water vapour condences inside the freezer. There is probably a condensation tray somewhere that is overflowing into the freezer compartment. Once the ice build up on the bottom gets to a certain point the water then starts to run out the front of the fridge onto the floor. Remove the ice from the bottom of the fridge and empty the condensation tray. You may have to continually do this during humid periods. For me that is about 6 months of the year every 3 to 4 days. It's a pain but what are you going to do.

I have a frigidaire model fghb2844lpe that is full of moisture on the rear of fridge. Why?

I appreciate your post, gayannecox!

I see that your Frigidaire refrigerator is building condensation and appearing to get rusty. It sounds like a possible water leak within the cabinet of your refrigerator. I would recommend having a professional technician come out and review your refrigerator to provide an accurate diagnosis. I hope this information is helpful. -Matt

Water collecting in bottom of fridge

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand that you are receiving water at the bottom of your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FPUI2188LF. What can cause this is either humidity coming from outside your refrigerator or maybe from the crisper drawers. Make sure your crisper drawers are set for a high humidity. Another thing that can cause moisture build-up at the bottom of your appliance is not covering your foods. Make sure that all foods and drinks are covered to cut down on moisture floating around inside your appliance. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

What's your problem?ice buildup under french drawer refrigerator

It could just be condensation, especially if you live in a humid area. I'd consider adding some silica gel packets (the kind you find in shoeboxes,) to the place where the ice is building up and see if there are holes in the ice where the silica is. If so, it's moisture-based, and short of installing a dehumidifier in the house or running the AC constantly, your best bet is to invest in a thick rubber mat, like the kind offices have at the door, and place the fridge on it, possibly with a small one-inch-thick block of wood under each foot. That's what I had to do and to my surprise, my power bill went down. It turned out that the rubber mat caught the condensation and let it evaporate, plus the wooden blocks gave the refrigerator coils more ventilation, which made it run more efficiently. It was like a $5 difference per month on the electric bill, so definitely worth a try, plus if the rubber mat is rectangular, it'll protect the patch of floor in front of the fridge from any accidental spills.

We are experiencing heat along the panel between the fridge and the freezer. What could cause that?

Most refrigerators have some of the condenser coil running through this area to keep condensation down. As long as the unit is cooling fine and it is warm but not very hot there probably isn't a problem. You can check to see if the coils on the bottom are dirty, a cover will have to be removed. Also check to see if the condenser fan is running which is close by the compressor.

Water build up on inside of fridge door of ge french door fridge

humid air in the house. any time you open the fridge, house air is sucked in. when you close it, the fridge cools the air and moisture from the warm air condenses on any cold surface. also check to see if there is a gap in the seal.

Freezer in nice and cold but refridgerator is not

due to lots of moisture in the air or high humidity it creates extra frost in the freezing unit this creates blockage in the air flow once the ice crystals build up. the freezer is what keeps the fridge at the normal temperature if the air flow between the two are blocked in the ducting then the fridge temperature will rise the best way to solve this is to open the freezer take out the 4 screws in the back panel tilt the panel forward and blow it with a blow dryer till the ice chunk has melted its a good idea to use a towel and on the top self of the fridge to obsorb excess water this can be kinda messy. or you can unplug your fridge for about 6 or so hours. good luck hope i helped. :)

Build up of a lot of water in side the bottom of my fridge the goods are still being kept cool. Fridge is a bauknecht IRU 1433 EN 153 Service no. 01/7875 66

I have had this problem. Although I have not been able to pinpoint the exact reason, I suspect that it is due to an old door gasket that is not providing a good enough seal all around the door. In especially humid weather, moist air outside the refrigerator gets in and the moisture condenses, much like on a glass of ice water on a humid day. If it bothers you enough, I'd say replace the door gasket.
