Question about Apricorn EZ Bus DTS (EZ-BUS-DTS-500e) 500 GB SATA Hard Drive

1 Answer

Not recognized on Mac

I've used my Ez Bus Dts external hard drive for about four months now with now problem. All of a sudden (no drops or spills or anything) my Macbook will not recognize the drive. I've been using on my Mac for sometime now. Occasionally the red indicator light will turn off when I insert the USB cord into the computer, however the machine still sounds like it's running. I've open up the face, dusted off the inside and made sure everything was still connected.

Please, please, please help me.

Re: Not recognized on Mac

In my experience those enclosures are infamous for not having the most durable bridge boards. The bridge board is a chip that has a chipset on it which take the SATA or PATA connection and send it to the USB and or Firewire ports on the enclosure. If the drive is powered up, you should get a small red or orange light on the front. When connected to either mac or pc ( porsches are MS_DOS formatted out the box ), if it does not mount or does not appear in DISK UTILTY, then it is a high probability that the enclosure/bridge board has failed and the drive ( if not making grinding, buzzing, clicking or beeping sounds) will have to be extracted and placed into a more stable enclosure.

If your USB drive is not being recognized by your computer when you plug it in

try unplugging it, and also unplugging any other USB devices that are connected.

All USB devices, even those that have an external power supply, draw a portion of their power directly from the USB bus.

If you have too many devices connected to the same USB controller, problems such as a drive not being recognized can result.

Incompatible File System

The Mac-operating system can read drives formatted under the FAT32 and NTFS file systems used by Windows, but Windows will not recognize HFS, the file system used by Mac OS.

If you connect an HFS-formatted external drive to a computer running Windows, the drive will spin up but Windows will not respond.

The drive will have to be used with a Mac, or reformatted using a disk-partitioning utility.

Drive Disconnected from Power

Some external hard drives have the option of drawing all their power from the USB bus, or receiving supplemental power from a wall outlet.

If your drive will not operate using power from the USB bus only, connect the power supply. Many drives do not have this option; they will not operate unless they are connected to both a power outlet and a USB port.

Driver Update Required

Some older motherboards may require updated USB drivers to properly utilize a modern USB 2.0 device.

If you have exhausted all the basic troubleshooting steps above, visit the website of your motherboard's manufacturer and look for updated USB drivers.

Also, ensure that your Windows installation is fully up to date.

Corrupted Files

USB hard drives are susceptible to data corruption if either the power or USB cables are disconnected during a write operation.

Over time, this could lead to a situation in which Windows will be unable to write to the drive correctly.

To have Windows attempt to fix corrupted files, run Scandisk by right-clicking on the drive after double-clicking on "My Computer." Click Properties > Tools > Error Checking. Click the two check boxes to have Windows attempt to fix errors and bad sectors.

Click "OK" to start the operation.

Depending on the size of your hard drive and the speed of your computer, this operation can take a few hours to complete.

Failing Hardware

If your drive is still not being recognized, but it is making audible noises when it is plugged in, the drive may be failing.

Nearly every hard drive manufacturer distributes a free utility to check the drives that they make for errors.

Visit the manufacturer's website to download this utility.

If the drive is failing, the utility will most likely be able to detect it.

Contact the manufacturer for a replacement if the drive is under warranty.

I Have a Hitachi Lifestudio hard drive attached to my Apple G5 for 7 months now, and suddenly just dessapear of my desktop or menu the Computer it won't recognize it anymore HELP!!!!!!

ry connecting the external hard drive to another computer to recover/backup your data.
When you have such a large capacity hard drive, it pays to have a second large capacity hard drive to backup your data in the event of the other hard drive dying.Hard drives do fail especially if you accidently drop it.

Second time this has happened, Apricorn ez bus dts power supply

You can use a universal Adapter.
All you need to do is to match the correct voltage and the correct Ampere.
Lets say for example the input of your adapter is : 100-240v, 50,60hz . and 0.5 A
the output is : 12vor 5v 2A
So check this that correspond to the one you already have.
But one thing :: don't use one that is of a higher voltage capacity.
It will burst out forever the disk........
If you need any further help please let me know.

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.
