The CIH virus infects executable files and is spread by executing
an infected file. Since many files are executed during normal use of
a computer, the CIH virus can infect many files quickly.
There are several variants of the CIH virus. Some activate every
month on the 26th, while other variants activate just on April 26th or
June 26th. Once the CIH virus activates, the virus attempts to erase
the entire hard drive and to overwrite the system BIOS. Some machines
may require a new BIOS chip to recover if overwritten by the CIH
virus. CIH only affects Win95/98 machines.
More technical details about the CIH virus can be found at the
following site.

Hope this is some good knowledge base for your project.
CIH, also known as Chernobyl or Spacefiller, is a computer virus written by Chen Ing Hau (陳盈豪, pinyin: Chén Yíngháo) of Taiwan. It is considered to be one of the most harmful widely circulated viruses, overwriting critical information on infected system drives, and more importantly, in some cases corrupting the system BIOS.
The name "Chernobyl Virus" was coined some time after the virus was already well-known as CIH, and refers to the complete coincidence of the payload trigger date in some variants of the virus (actually the virus writer's birthday) and the Chernobyl accident, which happened in the Ukrainian SSR on April 26, 1986.

My comptuer was moving very sluggishly, so I put in the recovery CD and started to reformat everything. At first it went fine, then it gave me an error message saying ''CDR101: Not ready reading reading drive Q Abort, Retry, Fail?'' Now, I can't recover or load up Windows XP. It keeps saying I have an invalid system disc, to change it and press any key to continue (not that it does continue). I'm not even using any disc. The CD Drive is empty. I even tried using the ghostimage but don't have a password, and sometimes I get it to try to load Win98 (which of course fails), which makes no sense since this is an XP system. I don't even have a CD for Win98, so it's not like I'm using the wrong one. This Recovery CD says it's for the M35X series (M30x as well). Looking through Drive Q, several programs like Setup.exe won't run in DOS, the only option available to me when I Abort (Retry and Fail do nothing but repeat the three options.)
