Question about Heating & Cooling

Capacitor blow out

My air conditioner made a loud explosive noise and the capacitor looks like a soda can that has blown out with blackish liquid running out. Can I just replace that part, or is there usually a bigger problem?

The capacitor can be replaced . They hold alot of power so its advised an electrician chane it out. He can test for cause of failure also. Don't be messing with the gooey stuff.. Good luck

you need to replace your condensing fan motor. the noise you are hearing is the compressor working against a lot of pressure because the heat is building up in you condensing unit. Prolonged operation without an operating condensing fan motor will cause your compressor to burn up, and then you will have the cost of a compressor changeout to the cost of a condensing fan motor.

It shouldn't be too loud. You don't explain where the noise is coming from? The air handler/furnace or the outdoor unit.

Fan inside blower unit stuck or seized. The compressor noises are because liquid refrigerant is coming back because it's not picking up heat from the room. Check/ clean the filters and spin the motor of the fan WHILE SWITCHED OFF. If it spins, it's probably the fan capacitor. If it doesn't, get a new fan

I have a goodman cple42-1 The fan motor outside was not running and I was able to get it started but the house wont cool now. air is blowing but not cold.

the capacitor is possibly bad the indoor fan uses its own capacitor while the outdoor fan and compressor share a capacitor

AIr does not cool very well. It used to do better. Can I check the freon charge?

look under the hood for the reciever dryer, its black and about the size of a soda can, it has a little clear glass in the top, start your engine, turn on the air check for the compressor running and look in the sight glass and see if you can see liquid with a few bubbles going by, if no liquid or bubbles its possibly low on freon

Hello, if you cannot turn the fan by hand then the motor is shot. However, when power is applied to the motor and it starts after you give it a push then its the capacitor. Whenever you replace a motor tje capacitor must be replaced aswell because the microfarad rating of tne capacitor may have changed.

My air conditioner is on but not blowing cold air and buzzes

The compressor is not starting. The buzzing noise you hear is the compressor trying to start and then the thermal overload trips. When it cools it will try to start again. Could be a bad capacitor or the compressor is bad. These two units need to be tested to see which one is bad. A capacitor is inexpensive. If it's the compressor it will be cheaper to buy a new AC.
