Hi could you explain to me the role of the microprocessor instruction set.

    What do you mean by and all their variations? Do you mean like the Arithmetic and logic instructions etc.

An instruction set is a list of all the instructions, and all their variations, that a processor (or in the case of a virtual machine, an interpreter) can execute.
Instructions include:

  • Arithmetic such as add and subtract
  • Logic instructions such as and, or, and not
  • Data instructions such as move, input, output, load, and store
  • Control flow instructions such as goto, if ... goto, call, and return.
An instruction set, or instruction set architecture (ISA), is the part of the computer architecture related to programming, including the native data types, instructions, registers, addressing modes, memory architecture, interrupt and exception handling, and external I/O. An ISA includes a specification of the set of opcodes (machine language), the native commands implemented by a particular CPU design.

How to reset avr5805


n very rare instances, the AVR-5805 internal microprocessor might lock up, or otherwise cause mis-operation. This might be caused due to an AC line surge or line spike noise, or by static electric discharge on or nearby the unit, or to connected components. If the condition cannot be corrected by powering off the unit, including disconnection of the AC cord for a period of ten minutes and subsequent re-connection, then the unit may have to be re-initialized. Doing so will restore the microprocessor to its original out-of-the-box state, with all custom memories and settings erased, and the original factory default settings restored. Only use this procedure if you are sure that the microprocessor requires re-initialization.
1 Switch off the unit using the Main unit's power operation
switch.
2 Hold the following STANDARD button and HOME THX
CINEMA button, and turn the Main unit's power operation
switch on.
3 Check that the entire display is flashing with an interval of
about 1 second, and release your fingers from the 2 buttons
and the microprocessor will be initialized.
NOTES:
If step 3 does not work, start over from step 1.
If the microprocessor has been reset, all the settings are reset
to the default values (the values set upon shipment from the
factory).

This should resolve your propblem... taken from the Denon USA FAQ...

You’ll rarely need to "initialize the microprocessor" under normal operating conditions. In a few cases, the microprocessor will temporarily freeze or "lock up" just as your home computer does. When this happens, just follow the guidelines in the back of your owner’s manual to "unlock" the microprocessor and restore normal operation. (This is directly comparable to rebooting your computer. It’s an electronic wake up call to your unit’s temporarily paralyzed microprocessor "brain.")
If you experience some unusual behavior -- a channel that’s suddenly silent, "forgotten" level adjustments, some eccentricities in your unit etc. -- you may need to reset the microprocessor. Of course, you should check all connections carefully first. But if you’ve eliminated these items as a source of potential problems, you may need to go through the initialization process.)
Initialization is easy. Please refer to your owners manual for instruction on reseting the microprocessor as each unit may have its own individual protocal for reset.
What causes these problems? Several things can -- a jolt of static electricity, a current surge through an antenna input, etc. But don’t worry, the microprocessor is well shielded from any permanent effects.
When you do initialize the microprocessor, remember that this erases any setup instructions you may have previously programmed into the unit. However, the on-screen menu will quickly get you through a new setup. And, if you write down your preferred settings BEFORE you reset your unit’s microprocessor, you’ll have an even easier job!
If in the event you do intialize microprocessor reset please refer to your owners manual for instructions on setup..

Loses programing


It has a microprocessor that is supposed to keep the settings. What is happening is that the microprocessor is not holding the configuration, or the configuration is not being saved as it should be. This could indicate a bad microprocessor or a failed state maintainer circuit. In both cases I would suggest that you take you unit to a qualified electronics repair shop.

PROCESSOR HISTORY AND INFORMATION

INTEL 4004 - Microprocessor introduced in 1970 with the speed of 108KHz was the worlds first microprocessor.
INTEL 8080 - Microprocessor introduced in 1974 running at the speed of 2 MHz was used in the world's first PC, the Altair.
INTEL 8086 (Code Name: P1)- Microprocessor first introduced in 1976. The 80086 had a 16-bit architecture that allowed it to work with 16-bit binary numbers and pass them through a 16-bit data bus. The 8086 was available in clock speeds of 5MHz, 8MHz, and 10MHz.
MOTOROLA 68000 - Microprocessor released in 1979 was later chosen by Apple for the Macintosh computer.
INTEL 8087 - Floating-point math compressor compliant with the 8086 / 8080 microprocessor family.
INTEL 8088 - Microprocessor released in 1979. The 8088 was the first Processor used in the original IBM PC and XT personal computers because it was less expensive than the 8086 microprocessor because of the availability of less expensive eight-bit data bus supporting chips made it the microprocessor for the IBM PC. The 8088 was available in speeds from 4.77 MHz and 8MHz.and used the 16-bit architecture allowing it to work internally with 16-digit numbers. The 8088 had the ability of addressing up to 1MB of RAM.
INTEL 80286 (Code Name: P2) - Microprocessor introduced by Intel in 1982 which commonly is referred to as the 286 processor. The 286 processor supported 16-bit architecture, supported virtual memory, and was available in clock speeds of 8MHz, 10MHz, and 12MHz. The 286 was around 20 times faster than the predecessor 8088.
INTEL 80287 - A compliant processor to the 286, a floating-point math coprocessor. Specially designed 286 chips have the capability of placing the optional 80287 processor on top of it, giving the computer a math coprocessor.
INTEL 80386DX (Code Name: P3) - Microprocessor manufactured in 1985 was the next generation of Intel processors. The 80386DX included the math compressor, unlike the 80386SX, and still featured the 32-bit architecture and built-in multitasking. The chip was available in clock speeds of 16MHz, 20MHz, 25MHz, and 33MHz.
SPARC - Released in 1987 is short for Scaleable Processor ARChiture by Sun - used RISC (Reduced Instruction Set) to speed up processing.
INTEL 80486DX (Code Name: P4) - Microprocessor released April 10th 1989. The 486DX featured a built-in memory cache and 32-bit architecture. It had more than three times the computing power of the 386DX and was available in clock speeds of 25MHz, 33MHz, and 50MHz.
INTEL 80386SX - Microprocessor introduced in 1989 was the next generation of Intel processors. The 80386SX lacked a math coprocessor but still featured the 32-bit architecture and built-in multitasking. The chip was available in clock speeds of 16MHz, 20MHz, 25MHz, and 33MHz.

Alarm 1 won't go off when set to AM


Sorry it took so long to answer your question about the Clock/Radio. This look like a problem with the Clock/Radio's Microprocessor. You will need to reset the microprocessor by removing all power sources to the microprocessor. This means removing the Clock/Radio from the A/C power source and removing the internal battery (CR2430). After removing all the power sources from the Clock/Radio, let the Clock/Radio set for a period of about 3 hours. This will let the power completely drain from the microprocessor and reset it to the factory settings. You can then reinsert the internal battery and plug the Clock/Radio into the A/C power source. The Clock/Radio should have reset and the functions returned to normal operations. If The Clock/Radio functions have not returned to normal. You will need to let the Clock/Radio's microprocessor drain off the power again and put a new internal battery (CR2430). Then test the Clock/Radio's functions again. The Clock/Radio functions should have returned to normal operation. If you are still having problems getting the Clock/Radio to return to normal operation. You can call the Emerson customer support at this telephone number 1-800-909-1240- Call them between the hours of 8am to 4:30pm central time USA. This does sound like a uP (Microprocessor) problem... If you don't know what a microprocessor is or how to troubleshoot the problem, your best bet is to cut your losses and take the set to a repair shop. In addition to the possibility of a microprocessor the easiest thing to check for would be to actually check the wiring... Sorry i cant help you more...
