Question about RCA DRC8335

Unit totally locked up

Brand new unit, worked for 3 days just fine, - then froze up.  The only button that works on the unit or remote is the standby button.  Blank DVD stuck in DVD tray.  Video stuck in the video slot.  The only thing on the display is a scolling "Hello". Unplugged and plugged it back in several times.  Not menu's, no anything.  HELP!

Same exact problem. Unit a month old, DVD stuck in video slot, no
menus, no buttons on unit or remote will respond, just "hello"
scrolling across the readout. Unplugged the unit several times,
    no response.

Unit displays "Hello" only. I have called "customer no service" and they walked me through soft and hard resets, but neither worked. This is a replacement unit for the orginal purchases in 12/06. The replacement has pasted warranties and they said 79.99 to fix.

i have the same exact problem. all unit will scroll is hello. i threw my box for the unit away, so i thought i would buy another and exchange the old one but walmart has not restocked the unit in months. i guess i'm stuck. i had problems with error codes on the panasonic units i had so i decided i would go for the rca unit. what a mistake, at least the panasonic units lasted at least a year. this rca unit didn't last a month. JUNK

In December 2006 I purchased an RCA DVD recorder (I believe model 240?). In late June 2007 the unit quit working. I contacted RCA and they told me to send the unit to them (I paid the $25 shipping charge). They sent me the DRC8335 unit sometime late July early August. This unit worked (not very well) for about a total of 15-20 hours and on January 17, 2008 quit working. I have called "customer service" and they walked me through the reset options, but nothing worked. The replacement has pasted the warranty and they said $149.99 to fix, plus I have to pay the $25 shipping again, even thought I didn't have the unit from mid June to late July. I should have known there was something "special" about this unit when it has it "own" toll free number _ just for DRC8335. WARNING- STAY AWAY FROM RCA - they are not concerned about their products. I even wrote to RCA headquarters and it fell on deaf ears - I never receive a response back from them - nothing - not-a - zip - zilch. What a wonderful way to run a business!!!!!!

My unit will lock up also. I have unplugged it and it will work for 5 minutes and then say no signal input, then lock up and the remote won't work for any function. The only thing that works is to unplug it. DTV tuner is the same way.

  • maryc114 Apr 21, 2008

I have had the same problem, locking up, cannot remove dvd or vhs.
It would usually be OK after I unplugged it, but this time, it will not
work at all, a vhs and a dvd are stuck in the machine. I even left it off overnight

I have the RCA model DRC 8335, it too locks up frequently, but the instruction manual fix has always worked in the past, to hold the on/standby button on the unit for 10 seconds. Right now I have a VHS tape in the machine and the unit is claiming there is no tape. I have tried this solution many times and so far nothing has worked. I have not tried unplugging yet, it is not easy to get to plugs and I do not have time to reset all info. The unit is working on DVD right now. Will try the other after attempting support call tomorrow. Will see. Not impressed with unit overall

    RCA DRC8335
Our unit locks up in the middle of a movie, not always the same place in the movie. then the screen scrolls hello, the only working button is the standby/on button, and sometimes this does not work, right now we are unplugging and resetting the unit everyother day. Or one min it says there is a DVD next moment it does not register it. There is a tape in the machine, but the machine says that there is not. when it plays a tape the tracking is so screwed up that it is constantly trying to fix the tracking, until 1/4 to 1/2 the movie has played thru. I was advised to send this back and pay the shipping, but why should I pay for a piece of junk that seems it is not fixable. Can we say class action suit? It is upsetting enough for me to suddenly not be able to finish the movie I was watching but how do you explain that to a room full of kids ages 3 to 11, sorry it's raining but we can't watch the movie cause the player does not realize the disc is in, oh yeas, it does not matter if the disc is old or new...
RECALL RECALL RECALL REFUND REFUND REFUND
I remember when RCA was a reputable company... where are they now?

Bought a RCA DRC8335 about 5 months ago it, did not work as good as my old one, - then froze up. The only button that works on the unit or remote is the standby button. The only thing on the display is a scolling "Hello". Unplugged and plugged it back in several times. Not menu's, no anything. PLEASE HELP!

  • dashhills Sep 13, 2008

The unit has been working fine, until yesterday.  Now it will only say Hello.  Nothing else works.  To turn off the power you have to unplug it.  We have had the unit for almost two years, so I seriously doubt it is under warranty so that solution is of ZERO help.

  • Anonymous Sep 28, 2008

Unit says no DVD when DVD in, recorded a VHS tape from HBO playback was fast and garbled. Unplugged SOS now unit is about 10 mo old, got the hello and can't do nothing, unplug, plug again again, then get the menu with no icons to chose what to do just bland menu, thought ok I'll try to put in a VHS tape, stuck in there now, cannot remove DVD, returning product.

They tell me to take to service ctr to have VHS and DVD removed for credit, I call service ctr, they only work on TV's and they have told RCA that.

Would anyone have the internet address to log in for service? I lost my bookmark. I know I reported a problem months ago and need to find it on their site. Thanks

  • diverdelo Oct 03, 2008

Same problem with three units. Units locked up with only the "HELLO" flashing across the screen. Held down POWER button. Unplugged and plugged back in, no help. Called "Service" , mailed in units. Still waiting for units to be returned after six weeks. "Not in stock" Offered a refund based on receipts. Now waiting for their call back with what will be the refund. Wish I viewed this website before mailing units. Have a father-in-law that could have replaced circuit. I would be willing to join in class action suit. diverdelo2@aol.com

  • tigra68 Dec 02, 2008

Count me in on a class action law suit. It is obvious that this unit was manufactured defective and even though they know it, they are refusing to do anything about it. I have already reported the product to the Consumer Protection Agency. If enough people report it, maybe they will force a recall of the product.

  • rfc2005 Dec 03, 2008

This is what I have been told after sending my unit in over 6 weeks ago with the same problem.

They have no units to make a replacement. If you do not have a receipt and the unit is under warranty, they will refund you what they call a "fair market value" of $134.37.

This is bull****, I paid over $200.00 in May. Count me in on any lawsuit.

Does anybody have an a good receipt to fax me. I can not find mine.

  • dan Dec 22, 2008

well add me to the list never even used mine and its locked up. what steps do i need to take to get this piece fixed

  • Anonymous Feb 24, 2009

Well it seems that DRC8335 is a lost cause. Mine started with a stuck VCR tape that once in, would do nothing. At that time the DVR worked to record off my camcorder--but once that finished, it would not finalize. Decided to tackle the stuck VCR tape--gasp--I removed the screws in the back!--but no problem, I'm out of warrenty as of 2 months ago too. Removing the stuck tape was relatively easy compared to other VCR's I've manually ejected tapes from; however, I thought, no way can there be something wrong with my new machine, so I put in a different tape. yup, it got stuck, removed the screws, took out the tape, sealed it back up. Got the HELLO HELLO HELLO screen (something of a a Seinfeld montage!) I'm pretty much ready to shoot the thing. Got the secondary number for calling, 877-805-0519, the number they stuck their Indian employees with so that they could deal with this problem. Turning off and the 10 sec button do not work, repairing would be "not cost-effective" but I should look at one of their authorized dealers for replacing the machine!! I potlitely told them I thought a $200+ machine should last me way more than a year (especially for the use it got) and that I would certainly not be looking to buy RCA again. Can ANYONE suggest a GOOD alternative machine? Running the camcorder stuff through my computer sucks up way too much time!

CALL 1-877-805-0519
I just called, if I mail it back, they will send a replacement. I also mentioned I have a VHS & DVD stuck in it, and was told to have it removed by a repair shop, and they would reimburse me up to $20.

How can we get a recall going?

Posted on Apr 08, 2008

I called the secondary 800# as the number in the manual has a recording for "if you are calling about the drc8335 call 877-805-0519" how bout it? A separate number just for this unit?

The guy said to unplug the unit for at least 30 MINUTES & that I would have to rescan in all the channels I have spent alot of time scanning in by rotation of the antenna. Geezzz I wish I had returned it to the store before the 90days were up... (price has dropped below $150 was 219 last year?)

Unplug the power for ~30second is my working solution for this lock up problem and this is not the only SDTV tuner that I have had lock up, from motorola to magnavox they ocassionally locked up on me and the only solution is to unplug the unit from A/c to reboot the computer in it. These "tuners" need spike/surge/filtering of AC I suspect. This RCA/Thompson 8335 combo is particularly agravating for me now with a tape stuck in it. Can anyone say RECALL?

Sounds like the unit may have seized (common occurence with this unit). Disconnect the positive battery terminal, wait ten seconds, reconnect. If you have a security radio be sure to have the code handy.

DVD Player does not work

General Problems
Player won’t work (locks up)
• Try unplugging the AC power cord and plugging it back in.
• Reset the DVD/VCR: on the front of the unit, press and hold the STANDBY/ON button while you press and hold the STOP button—wait at least 3 seconds
before you release both of the buttons. You’ll need to set up your menu preferences because this Reset Procedure returns the DVD/VCR’s menus to the
factory default settings and also erases the contents of the Disc Library.
