Question about Mtd 22" White Outdoor Self Propelled High Wheel Mower

Open Question

Self propel won't allow the mower to back up freely. works fine moving forward.

I have an MTD front wheel drive 21" cut 6.5 HP honda lawnmower. The front wheel self propel won't allow the mower to reverse freely. Is this an adjustment to the drive unit or do I need to replace the front wheel drive transmission?

if it is a belt driven drive check the belt for tension or break. or check the cable that engages the drive wheels.

Yes it can be fixed. Try some basics first.
1) Check under belt drive cover for excess debris
2) Belt and Idler pulley condition
3) Control cable operation
a) rusted, frozen, broken, disconnected

The right rear wheel intermittently locks up on my lawnmower when going forward stopping forward movement temporarily, until I move it backwards to "unlock" it. Any ideas?

There is an excellent 3 part video that may help you to fix this problem. Please see the 2nd and 3rd videos:
https://youtu.be/Vk_tpjKlbjM
https://youtu.be/DdiewLxTQDc
Things you can try:
(1) Remove casing over rear wheel drive assembly and perform a test run to assure all parts are moving as expected
(2) Lubricate the shafts with lightweight motor oil where the shaft penetrates into the gear box of each wheel
(3) Remove each rear wheel, inspect gears for damage and free movement. Grease up each drive gear and the shaft.
(4) Inspect gears on each wheel for damage.
(5) If none of the above fixes the problem, try swapping out the front wheels to the rear wheels provided the front wheels can accommodate the gearing on the rear wheels
(6) If this doesn't work try replacing the small gear assembly on the right rear wheel
These steps are illustrated in the videos.
Good luck and hope this helps.

How to remove rear drive wheels on old MTD 21

Daren Ingold's suggestion works only for the right rear wheel on my 19+ year old MTD Yardman 21" self propelled mower. The ratchet spur on rear left wheel is held on by a bolt in the center of the axle and a spline. Remove the center bolt and washer. Pry the ratchet spur off the spline by using three medium blade screwdrivers wedged between the wheel and the spur gently tapping the three screwdrivers in succession until the spur is half off the spline. It will come off easily after that. Remove the spur, noting direction, and remove the wheel and replace it with one of the front wheels (they're all the same design) if it is in better condition and use the rear wheel for the front. Good luck ever finding a new replacement for this particular wheel. My mower is 19+ years old but runs perfectly otherwise. Stored in dry basement.
