Question about Teledyne Laars Laars Lite 2 Pool Heater 125,000 Btu / Propane Gas

1 Answer

Teledyne Series 2 Model ESG Pool heater pilot know will not turn

Pilot assembly stuck on "off" position after winterizing and will not depress and turn to "on" or "pilot". Pool has been converted to salt, and valve assembly may be salt corroded possibly. Do I force the knob to turn and risk breaking it,or can I simply replace knob assembly (appears to have only 2 star-shaped small screws holding it down) without fear of blowing up the heater, or having to purchase a whole new gas valve assembly. The heater is 11 years old, and newer gas valve is 2 years old. Thank you for your cooperation in getting the pool heated up for our very short 3 month Winnipeg pool season!!!!

Hi! I moved into a bank owned home with a hot tub that has a gas LAARS LITE 2 Teledyne heater. It is not working, so I had someone come out and check it. He said I need to purchase a pilot assembly before...

Go to and download a manual for your model. Get the model number from the heater, and look up a manual. If yours is a milivolt model, the pilot must be working to troubleshoot further. The manuals will be full of information.

On my Teledyne Laars Series 2 Model ESG, the pilot light does not come on, even with repeated use of the sparker, with knob in Pilot position and depressed. What are the possible problems and how to fix?

Corrosion has settled or a spider has likely nested inside the pilot assemble and it needs to be cleaned out. Compressed air WILL NOT work. You need to remove the pilot and remove the obstruction with a small screwdriver or similar tool.

You will also want to be sure your spark igniter is working once the pilot assembly is out. Hit the spark button with the pilot on the ground (Not in your hand!) and look for a small spark jumping the gap from the probe and the pilot head.

If you are at all unsure if it is working, try using a long lighter to ignite the pilot.

What type of pipe is needed on the inflow of the teledyne laars?

Most pool stores carry a set of two pipes used for older heaters. They are about 17" long, stainless steel, and bend 90 degrees about 8" from one end. They are usually refered to as heat sinks. The fact that the old one has pin holes in it would lead me to believe using PVC would be a bad idea.
