Question about Toshiba Satellite A305-S6863 Laptop
The webcam on my laptop works about 1% - 2% of the time. 98% of the time it does not work. The laptop is brand new...less than a year old. I ran Driver Detective on the laptop and it tells me the driver for the camera is working and up to date. I have had this problem since day 1.
When I try to start the webcam it tells me any of the following messages: "the webcam is not connected, sorry, no webcam was found on your system" or that it is "blocked by another application."
I contacted Toshiba a couple of months after purchasing the laptop and told a lady about the problem. (I am no genius on computers, so I hope you keep this in mind when you correspond with me...layman's terms only please.) The woman had me go to different places on my laptop...looking back I have no idea where...she told me to check certain boxes or uncheck certain boxes which I did. She told me the webcam is used by several programs on the computer and in the end she had me blocking certain startup programs. In the bottom right of my monitor their is an icon for "Blocked startup programs." When she had gotten to the end of guiding me here and there, checking or unchecking boxes...the webcam had started working. It is important to mention though, it had worked sporadically since I bought the laptop. So, was this just a coincidence? The next time I went to use the webcam, I was right back at square one. The webcam was not working again and giving me the same old messages.I was really ********** because I had done everything she had told me, and in addition, I now had blocked startup programs and still had the same problem with the webcam that I had from the very beginning. Also, it seems kind of ridiculous to me that I had to block certain startup programs to begin with. A new computer and you have to block certatin programs to use the webcam. (Just also remembered, I have a burner on this laptop and when I have tried to burn downloaded songs to disc, it shows that songs are being burned, but upon playback the disc has nothing on it. My sister tried using the disc after to burn music...thinking maybe the burner had not done anything to the disc... and the disc would not record a thing. :-( It just became a piece of garbage. I did this with three discs. She took two of my remaining discs and burned downloaded music and did playback on her own pc with no problem whatsoever. So, based on this, the discs were not the problem.)
Back to the webcam problem: For your information, I have closed yahoo messenger and windows live messenger to see if that makes any difference. The webcam still does not work. Now and then...by no means always...I shut down the computer and sometimes...not very often, however, when I try to start the webcam the stupid thing works. Right now, it is not working again and I am at a total loss for answers and extremely frustrated. My gf is a nurse stationed in Afghanistan. I am able to see her camera, but she is unable to see me. When I try starting my webcam she just sees the same words that I see... that I
have cancelled my invitation to view webcam. It is very upsetting to her that I haven't been able to get this problem fixed. Could you please contact me at your first opportune moment and if at all possible help me to fix this problem once and for all. I would be deeply appreciative and I assure you she will be also.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite T2080. When I scanned the laptop with Driver Detective...I think that is the name of the program...it said the laptop is A200. I don't know if that helps you or not. In any event, whatever information you may need that I have not provided... in your correspondence simply direct me to look for... or do whatever is necessary to help you resolve the problem(s). In the meantime, I hope I have not confused you with my explanation of the problems by being so long winded. I am more than a little anxious to hear from you very soon! Thank you.
Gordon Mackey have the same problem but my laptop is a305 s6872 (model number psag8u) and all of the sudden, the other day, the webcam refused to work for me. is it funny how the tech support ppl always want you to rebbo the comp. well i refuse to do...so please help anyone.
i tried uninstalling the webcam and installing it back and forth a couple of time but with no success. help anyone thanks :(
With most laptops, being proprietary, there is a lot of installed software that you don't need. One good thing to do is go to "Add / Remove Programs" in the control panel, and remove any Toshiba software you don't need.
While in the control panel, find the "User Controls" and disable it. That will stop the system from blocking startup programs. Vista Home Premium is really bad about crossing wires with drivers and other functions when it comes to instant messaging and web cams.
After you've removed all the unnessary junk software and shut off the User Controls - uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the web cam, and reboot your computer. Use your web cam through your instant messenger service only, and most of the time it should work. Also, if you're using a password to log onto your system, get rid of it (the password) by going to Users in Control Panel and select to change you password. Leave the "New Password" fields blank, and click "OK" or "APPLY" so there are no limits to the use of the system.
This is the method I used to fix one of my customer's Toshiba laptops and it works to this day (7 months now).
If all else fails, disable the onboard camera and buy and after market camera to be used through the USB port and that should also solve the problem as it will be a 3rd party install and not a Toshiba proprietary.

Many Toshiba laptops, including Satellite, Portege and Qosmio models, feature built-in Chicony-brand webcams.
The Chicony webcam can be problematic, especially when running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista.
Microsoft has released an update that will correct problems with starting the webcam after terminating "Sleep" mode.
Users may also have to install the appropriate driver or webcam software to correct webcam problems.
Dark or Black Webcam Image Problems
Toshiba laptop owners may have problems with the webcam displaying as dark or completely black a few seconds after the initial image appears or immediately after engaging the webcam.
Users should ensure that the webcam indicator light is engaged.
If not, users should run the "Camera Assistant Software" to turn on the webcam.
Low light can cause the webcam to power off and to display a dark image.
Users can tweak the light and contrast by manually increasing the lighting in the room or by turning on "Night Mode."
If these steps do not correct the dark image problem, users may have to reset the webcam itself, reinstall the "Camera Assistant" software.
Webcam Problems After Terminating Sleep Mode
Toshiba laptop owners with Windows Vista (any 32-bit edition) installed and the Chicony webcam may have problems starting the webcam after restoring the laptop from "Sleep" mode.
"Sleep" mode powers down a number of hardware components in the laptop.
The webcam is capable of entering a non-operating system-induced sleep mode when it is not used for an extended period of time.
After the user engages Windows "Sleep" mode and wakes the laptop, the webcam may give error messages such as "Locked by another application."
This webcam problem can be corrected by installing a Windows Hotfix, which is also included in Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).
Webcam Problems After Upgrading Windows Vista
Toshiba Satellite laptop owners may opt to use the Microsoft Anytime Upgrade to upgrade to Vista Ultimate.
After doing so, the Chicony webcam may stop working and report a "Please turn on the camera" error message.
Users can correct this problem by reinstalling the Chicony driver.
Webcam Problems on Linux
Linux users who own Toshiba laptops with the Chicony webcam should install the Linux UVC Driver to make the webcam functional. The webcam may not work without this driver.
Grainy or Blurry Webcam Image
The Chicony webcam can produce grainy or blurry images if the user does not remove the protective film that covers the external webcam interface.

Some webcams and programs require additional software, although that should be installed with the webcam if things are right.
But is does not harm to check if your Java, Flash and Quicktime software are installed and up to date.
But certainly check your DirectX software, since all video applications, including webcams, use DirectX for video processing.
Try downloading the latest DirectX version and install it (Windows XP: DirectX 9.0c - Windows Vista: DirectX 10).
